Florante's obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Florante "Jim" Jayme, a decorated Navy veteran and beloved family man. Florante passed away peacefully on January 5, 2025 at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, surrounded by his loving wife, children, and granddaughter. He leaves behind a rich legacy of lives touched in lasting ways.
Florante was known affectionately as "Jim" to some, however, he preferred his given name, Florante. He was a conscientious, selfless, and caring individual, always prioritizing others before himself. A man of devout faith, he was smart, selfless, loyal, and determined.
He lived a remarkable life. Born on November 2, 1939 to parents Raymundo Jayme, Sr. and Margarita Panlaqui, Florante grew up in Tondo Manila, Philippines as one of nine brothers and sisters. He joined the US Navy at 17 in Subic Bay, Philippines and served 20 years through the Vietnam War, finishing his profound military career as the Senior Enlisted advisor on the USS Mount Hood and retiring as Electrician’s Mate Senior Chief Petty Officer in 1978. Following his years in the Navy, Florante worked as an electrician at the University of Washington, retiring in 2007. He was a devout Catholic and a man of faith; his commitment to his beliefs was as steadfast as his commitment to his family.
He met the love of his life in the Philippines, Cholly Artuz Jayme, and they remained married for sixty years, raising four children together: Jerrard, Christine, Florante Jr, and Jean.
His teachings were simple yet impactful. One of his most profound lessons was the importance of family unity, always reminding his loved ones to put family first. These words were not just a lesson but a way of life for him. Another lesson he taught his family was the importance of giving back to others. Florante devoted countless hours to the Knights of Columbus, showing his love through food, tithing and passing out blessing bags to those in need.
Among his accomplishments, one that stands out was his immense contribution to sponsoring numerous family members to immigrate from the Philippines. His generosity and selflessness in this regard spoke volumes about his character.
Florante leaves behind his wife, 4 children, 10 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends who mourn his loss yet celebrate his life.
A memorial service to honor Florante's life will be held on February 20, 2025, at 12:00 PM at Saint Michael Parish in Olympia, Washington. Florante attended Saint Michael Parish since 1989. The following day, he will be laid to rest at Tahoma National Cemetery, on Friday, February 21 at 2:30 PM with full Military honors.
