Felicia's obituary

Felicia (Giganti) Hammond, born in Brooklyn, New York on July 3, 1932 passed away on February 11, 2022 surrounded by her three children in Santa Clarita Valley, California.

Felicia began life in New York, where she attended Barnard College as a first-generation scholar and earned a B.A. in English Literature. She then drove across the country to California where she would later raise three children that were her main sense of pride.

Her children recognize their mother for her many other achievements. As a single mother Felicia worked full time as a supervising social worker while obtaining her M.A. in English Literature from Cal State University, Los Angeles. At the same time she was a leader in the Sierra Club, traveled globally as well as organized family trips for her children and grandchildren, was a hiker, runner, a docent for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum, a breast and thyroid cancer survivor, played the ukulele, Mahjongg and Rummikub, loved to argue politics and philosophy, and read fine literature – her favorite being all of the works by Anthony Trollope - until her death.

She leaves many memories for her children from visits to Brooklyn to see her parents and enjoy Lemon Ice, S Bread, Good Humor Bars, Pizza and Chop Suey. While the family resided in East Los Angeles there were many opportunities for Felicia to film her children with the paper swords she had made, playing in the sandbox, tea parties and trips. Once she purchased her first, and last, home in Mar Vista, she held family dinners for any and all special occasions, again organizing entertainment for her adult children and grandchildren. Her final work is the journal she kept, titled “The Pandemic Years”, that the family will work to transcribe.

She is survived by her eldest son Michael Hammond and his wife Diane Ohala, middle child Eve “Evan” Bushman and her husband Eddie, and youngest child Lauren Greber and her husband Mike. She is also survived by grandchildren, again in order of age, Zachary Lefkowitz, Joey Rousos-Hammond and Samantha Bushman. She is likewise remembered by her brother Billy Giganti, his sons Derek Mitchell and Todd Feeney, her many friends at Atria Santa Clarita and her book club in Los Angeles. Felicia is preceded in death by her parents Edith and Frank Giganti, her beloved grandson Alexander Lefkowitz and her favorite dogs Dobie and Rascal.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Sierra Club, an organization that recently honored Felicia for 50 years of service.
