Evett's obituary

Evett Canada, was born Evett Colliner Scates on November 27, 1949, to Louisianians Audrey Lee and Earlene Marion Scates in Los Angeles, CA. She immediately brought joy into their family.

Evett attended Russell Elementary, Mount Vernon Junior High, and Los Angeles High School. She also studied various courses at Los Angeles City College. However, while attending Los Angeles High School, she met Frank Canada, Jr. The two eventually became inseparable high school sweethearts and later married on November 8, 1967. From their union, they were blessed to have three daughters, Christina, Sonya, and Shanda. Evett’s and Frank’s love and dedication to one another blossomed for 55 years.

Not only was Evett a beautiful, classy lady, she was also intelligent and had a strong work ethic. Through the years, Evett held employment positions that utilized her skill in shorthand dictation. Moreover, her flair for numbers eventually, led her into a career expanding 20+ years with California Hospital as the Payroll Supervisor. She also managed to work simultaneously with Becker CPA as a manager over their offsite CPA classroom to assist her daughter with college expenses. To make sure her understanding of having a strong work ethic was instilled in her three daughters, Evett would take her daughters to work with her and had them sorting payroll timecards, volunteering in the hospital, assisting with the setup of CPA classroom materials and many other tasks that would provide them with work experience.

Evett also had an entrepreneurial side. In her pastime, she sold Avon cosmetic products. Additionally, she hosted crystal parties where she sold fine crystal housewares as a Princess House representative. She did similar merchandise parties selling Tupperware. Evett didn’t hesitate to use opportunities that would positively impact her and her family.

Furthermore, amid having a career, Evett never lost sight of her need to be a lovingly nurturing mother. She made sure her family always came first. She understood the importance of building a stable home life with her husband, Frank. She also enjoyed singing and dancing with him to their favorite Motown hits. In addition to this, she emphasized to her daughters the importance of education and how it was an asset that could never be taken away. She enjoyed spending time with her daughters by taking them to church, reading books, teaching them how to knit, taking them to the skating rink and swimming pools during the summer, as well as, making sure they knew proper etiquette. She was truly an exceptional mother whose positive values, and nurturing character, she extended to her children, have been passed down to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a true example of what Proverbs 31 describes as a virtuous woman.

Unfortunately, in the early 2000’s, Evett’s health slowly began to limit her ability to continue being the energetic wife and mother her family had known. But, through it all, she never complained. Evett remained strong, continued to praise God in all things, provided encouragement, offered advice, and demonstrated the true example of what strength, and courage in a strong faithful wife, mother, and grandmother was to her family. She remained an essential pillar of her family until she was called to glory on September 10, 2023. Evett transitioned from her earthly body to her heavenly body in her home surrounded by her loved ones. Her family will never forget her unconditional love, selflessness, zeal for life, beautiful laugh, wonderful smile, and her kindheartedness.

Evett Canada was preceded in death by Elder Audrey Scates (father), Earlene Scates (mother), and Yvonne Scates (sister).
