Eugene's obituary

Eugene Earl Mead, age [88], passed away on January 10, 2026, in New Braunfels, Texas. A native of Southern California, Gene spent the last 15 years as a resident of New Braunfels, where he was a cherished member of the community.

Gene proudly served eight years in the U.S. Navy as a Second Class Electronics Technician from 1955 to 1958. During his service, he spent two years aboard the USS Okanogan, where he was responsible for all external communications. His professional career was marked by significant contributions to his country; he worked on the Space Program to help put man on the moon and later dedicated his talents to developing defense satellites for the U.S. Military. He spent 20 years a soccer coach in Southern California where he helped shape the lives of many young men and women through his dedication and example.

Known for his quick wit, story-telling, signature one-liners, and a heart always willing to help others, Gene was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Norma Kay Bickmore Mead; his children, Gena Kay Calta, Marty Allen Mead, Randall Lynn Mead, and Thomas Howard Mead; and his elder sister, Buella Beach. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Howard Mead and Mildred Gladys White Mead; his brother, Robert Mead; and his eldest grandson, Gregory Austin Calta.

Services will be held at 11:00 AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, located at 1390 Hanz Drive, New Braunfels, TX.
