Eufronio's obituary
Eufronio “Efren” Roman, age 77, passed from this life on May 22, 2024 after fighting a valiant battle with ALS. Efren was born on August 3, 1946 in Samal, Bataan Province, Philippines from two loving parents, Fernando and Mercedes Roman. He was the fourth child of seven close-knit siblings: Rufina (“Fe”), Alberto (“Bert”), Olympio (“Oly”), Jesusa (“Gessie”), Fidelina (“Del”), and Agnes (“Annie”). After obtaining his medical degree from Far Eastern University in Manila, Philippines, Dr. Roman met a beautiful and hard-working nurse, Susan Ilagan, while completing their rural medical training in Candalaria, Quezon Province, Philippines. The couple quickly fell in love and married on May 1, 1976 in San Pablo, Laguna Province, Philippines. Efren and Susan then gave birth to their oldest daughter, Susan (“Summer”). Throughout his medical career in the Philippines, Dr. Roman practiced medicine as a general practitioner.
In 1980, Efren, his wife, and young daughter immigrated to the United States by way of Canada. They first lived in Maryland, where Efren and Susan had two more daughters, Celestial (“Celeste”) and Leah. While in Maryland, Efren served as the President of the Filipino American (“Fil-Am”) Association of Anne Arundel County and established the organization’s long-standing tradition of holding annual Filipino Independence Day Festivals to showcase Filipino culture to Maryland residents. As a skillful bowler, Efren also founded the Fil-Am Bowling League of Anne Arundel County and encouraged much of his family and friends to play. While in Maryland, Efren worked at Howard University Hospital and established ESR Physicals, a company built to provide pre-medical examinations for insurance companies.
In 1998, Efren, his wife, and two youngest daughters moved to Arizona. While in Arizona, Efren continued his legacy of leadership and community-building. As an avid golfer, Efren established the Pinoy Golfers Club (“PGC”), where he brought together more than 70 PGC golfers for monthly golf tournaments. Efren also co-founded the Arizona Center for Clinical Trials to facilitate clinical research in the medical field. In the true spirit of hard work, Efren also obtained his real estate license and worked as a real estate agent for West USA Realty even after retiring from clinical research in 2012.
Efren was a devoted son, brother, husband, and father who made it his life’s work, above all, to care for and provide for his family. He is survived by his wife, Susan; three daughters and children-in-law - Summer and Allen, Celeste and David, and Leah and RaeRae; three siblings – Bert, Gessie, and Annie; and grandchildren – Logan, Alex, Ava, and Aurora.
His absence is greatly felt and he is incredibly missed by his family, friends, and the community he has built.
