Ethan Gibney, a beloved husband, son, and friend, passed away on July 24, 2025. Born on August 17, 1971, Ethan lived a fulfilling life full of intellectual pursuits, passion for the outdoors, and deep love for his family and friends.

Ethan is survived by his wife, Megan Gibney. The couple married in 2007 in Charleston, South Carolina, and shared many travel adventures around the globe in their time together.  He is survived by his mother, Gloria Gibney; his Aunt, Brenda Gibney; his Uncle, Rick Adams; his Aunt, Diane Blake; his Uncle, Bob Blake; and his cousins, Rob and Liza Blake. He was preceded in death by his father, Terry Gibney.

Ethan graduated  from Old Dominion University in 1997 with a degree in Geography and Oceanography. He continued his studies at Florida State University, earning a masters degree in Geography with a focus on GIS and Hurricanes in 2002.  His career spanned over 20 years supporting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).  His greatest pride and accomplishment was his impactful work at the National Hurricane Center, which showcased his brilliant intellect and dedication to his field. 

Ethan's personality was best described as quiet and thoughtful but he had a clever sense of humor and dimples that he liked to flash with his mischievous grin. He had a profound love for the natural world, and especially loved all things weather. He loved to hike and just be in nature, and his favorite thing of all was fishing in the Florida Keys. 

Ethan's loss is immeasurable. His kindness and spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him. However, the profound influence he had on the lives of others will forever serve as a testament to his remarkable life.

A memorial service is being held Saturday,  August 16th at 11:00am at El Camino Memorial - Encinitas (340 Melrose Ave, Encinitas, CA 92024) followed by a reception at 12:00pm at 138 Cerro St., Encinitas, CA 92024) to celebrate Ethan's life and share special memories.
