Esther "Sue"'s obituary

Esther M. “Sue” (Schmitt)(Lewinski) Lewis – “Music Makes the Heart More Beautiful”

Sue, affectionately known to her family as Suzy-Q, was born January 14, 1942, in Toledo, OH to parents Michael Joseph (Mike) and Jeanne Therese (Ceboll) Schmitt. She graduated in 1960 from St. Ursula Academy (Toledo, OH). Sue contemplated a life in the convent and attended Mary Manse College, receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1964. She went on to receive several post-graduate degrees in music as well.

Sue, whose true love was music, began her lifelong career as a musician in the Catholic Diocese of Toledo in 1956, working as a church organist for St. Catherine’s at the age of 14. She continued her career in the Diocese as an organist and Liturgical Director at various churches, including St. Joseph’s—Maumee and St. Clement. Sue also sang with the Toledo Opera.

Besides being a gifted vocalist and pianist, Sue also composed music. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, and loved when her grandchildren came to visit.

Sue is survived by her three children who will miss her dearly, son Michael (Heather Voke) Lewinski, and daughters Michelle O’Brien and Erin (Jesse) Lahey, as well as seven (7) grandchildren, Meghan, Hugh, and Liam O’Brien, and JJ, Cecily, Danny, and Betsy Lahey.

A memorial service is scheduled for April 14, 2018, 11:00 a.m., at St. Clement Church, 3030 Tremainsville Rd., Toledo, OH 43613, with a celebration of Sue’s life immediately following in the church hall.

Tributes in Sue’s name to the “Sue Lewis (Esther Schmitt) ’60 Memorial Music Scholarship” at her alma mater, St. Ursula Academy (http://www.toledosua.org/ - please notate the scholarship in the comment section to ensure the funds are properly directed), would be cherished.
