Essie's obituary
In Loving Memory of Essie Singleton
Essie Singleton, a woman of great strength, kindness, and style, was born on June 25th, 1939, in Olla, Louisiana. She was the beloved daughter of Alex Bolton Stamper and Alice Lee Stamper. Essie's early years were guided by her faith, and she confessed Christ at a young age, uniting with St John Baptist Church.
Growing up in the Oakland Unified School District, Essie received her education and graduated from McClymonds High School in 1957. Throughout her life, she held various jobs, but it was managing the day-to-day affairs of A1 Janitorial Services, a family-run business, that brought her the most fulfillment.
However, Essie's proudest role in life was being a mother to her five children. Her dedication and love for them were unparalleled. Supporting her children in their various activities, Essie became an avid sports fan. She found immense joy in cheering on her beloved Golden State Warriors, particularly during the past decade of their success. Alongside her passion for sports, Essie had a deep love for fashion. She was known for her stylish and elegant attire, even in her final days while playing Bingo, where she seized every opportunity to dress for the occasion.
On August 27th, 2023, Essie Singleton peacefully departed from this world, leaving behind cherished memories for all who knew her. She was preceded in passing by her parents, Alex and Alice Stamper, her sisters, Antowoner Stamper and Essie Mae Watson-Francisco, and two sons, Marcus Terrell Sr. and Cedric Phillips Sr., as well as her son-in-law, Byron McCullough.
Essie will forever be remembered by her daughters, Jasmin McCullough Grice of Oakland, California, and Sandra Dervin Maddox of Anchorage, Alaska, as well as her son, Marlon Grice, and daughter-in-law, Antoinette Grice of Hayward, California. Additionally, she leaves behind four nephews, Marion, Therion, David, and Deon, and two nieces, Wanette and Tina. Essie's memory will be cherished by numerous grandchildren: Dameon, Cedric, Tianti, Dominique, Kyle, Marcus Jr, Karl Jr, Nicole, Geneica, Gerri, Jasmin, KaSandra, Latisha, Marlana, and Mary Nell. She is also survived by a host of other relatives and friends who were touched by her warmth and love.
As we mourn the loss of Essie Singleton, let us remember the beautiful legacy she leaves behind. Her kindness, style, and unwavering love will forever be etched in our hearts.
May her soul rest in eternal peace.
