Background

THE SALVATION ARMY

Eric was the proud great great grandson of William Booth, who founded The Salvation Army in the slums of London in 1865 and served as it's first General (1878-1912).

His great aunt, Evangeline Booth ("Aunt Eva") was William's daughter and led the expansion of The Salvation Army into the US in the early 1900s. As such, Eric's extended family was intimately involved with The Salvation Army throughout his upbringing, inspired by William Booth's vision of serving and saving the poorest of the poor.

Our father had a kind, compassionate heart and we know he would be grateful to know his death helped raise money to support the most needy and least fortunate among us through The Salvation Army.

ALZHEIMER'S ASSOCIATION

Eric was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in May of 2015 and battled the disease with dignity and grace for eight years until his death in 2023.

Alzheimer's is a horrible disease that affects the lives of the diagnosed individual and their immediate family in profound ways for many years. Our mother Dee gracefully and heroically cared for our father in the face of the difficult challenges caused by his condition for eight years, allowing him to remain at home and live the best life possible. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have such a loving and resourceful caregiver.

The Alzheimer's Association is an important organization for our family for this reason. In addition to investing in research to cure and/or lessen the symptoms of Alzheimer's, they are an incredible resource to those with loved ones suffering from the condition.

The Alzheimer’s Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s disease care, support and research. Because of our donor support, the Alzheimer's Association has been able to receive over 220,000 calls to our 24/7 Helpline (800.272.3900), offering free confidential support and information. We've granted more than $59 million to 253 new scientific investigations in aggressive pursuit of our vision of a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia®. And we've led advocacy efforts to achieve a $300 million increase in federal Alzheimer’s and dementia research funding.

  • What is the history of your organization?

The Alzheimer’s Association was founded in 1980 by a group of family caregivers and individuals who recognized the need for an organization that would unite caregivers, provide support to those facing Alzheimer’s and advance research into the disease.
