Enkidu's obituary

Enkidu, of the wilderness and Uruk, passed away in 2770 BC after being plagued by an illness that made him suffer through his last days before death. Enkidu had one friend through his life, Gilgamesh, who  fought many battles with him.

Enkidu was created by the goddess, Aruru, his mother, in 2700 BC and set free to the wilderness. In his early life he remained in the forest where he was first placed by the gods. He was very hairy and roamed through nature seeming to be more like an animal than a human. He was first introduced to the city by a temptress who he found desire for. Enkidu went into the city of Uruk after hearing about the terrible actions that Gilgamesh was committing. He understood that he should stop Gilgamesh and tried to block him in his path. Gilgamesh and Enkidu did not begin by being friends, but first fought each other through the streets. After they wrestle and destroy walls, Gilgamesh threw Enkidu to the ground. This turning point is where they build a strong bond that never broke.

Gilgamesh and Enkidu just came off the high life after killing the Bull of Heaven. This bull was sent by Ishtar who was fuming after Gilgamesh had rejected her.  Enkidu cared greatly for his friend, Gilgamesh, and wanted to help him fight the Bull of Heaven. These two took on every challenge together always making sure they have each other's back. They were heroes who had saved the city of Uruk from the wrath of Humbaba. Then they took on the Bull of Heaven and once again protected Uruk from the harm the Bull of Heaven was reeking through the streets of the city. Although they were heroic in their own minds, and to the minds of many who lived in Uruk, they had angered the gods, specifically Ishtar. Her father, was someone to never mess with, Anu, the sky god. Anu had control over the bull of heaven and gave it to Ishtar to destroy Gilgamesh and Enkidu. Ishtar's only way of revenge on Gilgamesh was by taking his only friend away from him. Through each long and hard day, Gilgamesh was there by his friend as Enkidu began to decompose slowly.

Enkidu is to be remembered as a strong hero who protected the city of Uruk and Gilgamesh's best friend.
