Emily's obituary
Emily Dodson Hughes passed away on Wednesday February 15, 2023 at the age of 59. She was born on September 30, 1963 in Ocala, FL to Boyd Cranford Dodson and Susan Witt Dodson. She spent her childhood in Mountain Brook, Alabama and among horses in Ocala, Florida.
She attended Crestline Elementary and later Mountain Brook High School where she graduated in 1981. She majored in Geography and minored in Computer Science at The University of South Alabama. She was preceded in death by her ex-husband Brian Timothy Hughes (2015) whom she met in college and married on August 12, 1988 in Clearwater, Florida.
Emily and Brian moved to Birmingham after giving birth to their first child, Hannah (1989), and later had Collin (1990) and Dylan (1992). Emily was a loving and capable mother, having raised all three as their primary parent for many years. After her children grew up and moved out, she lived a few years in Washington, where she enjoyed practicing paragliding with views of Mt. Rainier. She later returned to Alabama for the remainder of her life.
Emily loved sharing pictures and stories of her kids, music, grilling and cooking, and the many active hobbies she had throughout her life. She loved running, biking, gymnastics, diving, and gardening.
Emily is survived by her three children Hannah, Collin, and Dylan, whom she loved fiercely. She is also survived by her siblings Susan Lee Dodson and Elizabeth Dodson Self, her mother Susan Witt Pierson, niece Hillary Jessica Rice, nephew Zachary Lillis Weir, and granddaughter Cassidy Hughes Silverman.
Emily was a patient, loving, and beautiful person and mother. Emily was a long-time resident of the Birmingham area. Her life will be celebrated at 11am on Friday, March 3rd at St Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Vestavia Hills.
