Elton's obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Elton Joseph Matherne Jr., who peacefully left us on January 22, 2026. Born on April 3, 1959, Elton lived a full and vibrant life, touching the hearts and lives of many with his warm, caring, and loving spirit.
Elton was known for his wit and humor. His friends and family remember how his comical demeanor brought laughter and light into their lives, reminding everyone the importance of living and enjoying life. He was a man who valued time, always prompt and fair in his dealings.
He is survived by his devoted and cherished wife, Marie Morvant Matherne; his children, Elton Joseph Matherne III (Heather Cherry), Brent Michael Matherne, Rusty John Matherne (Catelyn G. Matherne), and his daughter, Joycelyn Matherne Richards (John D. Richards).
He is also survived by his siblings: Carla Parr (Steve Parr), Suzanna Despaux (Byron Despaux), Angela Basse (Kiya Basse), and Daniel Matherne (Nicole Matherne).
Elton’s legacy continues through his grandchildren:

He is preceded in death by his parents, Joyce Perrin Matherne and Elton Joseph Matherne, and by his beloved grandchild, Emmett John Richards.
Great-grandmother and Great-grandfather: Lenora and John Perrin, Marie and Antoine Matherne.
He was a proud father and grandfather. The birth of his children and grandchildren were some of the happiest moments of his life — accomplishments that he held dear. His dedication to serve was evident in his 17-year tenure at the school board. His retirement was celebrated as a well-earned break after years of committed service.
A cherished part of Elton’s legacy was the years he spent at Fleming Canal Store, working side‑by‑side with the beloved owners, Margaret and Dave Favoloro — folks who weren’t just employers, but family in every way that mattered. Down on that little stretch of Lafitte, he found joy in the simple, steady rhythm of the day: fixing flats in the heat, filling up boats and cars, swapping stories across the counter, and laughing with friends who never stayed strangers for long.
Those were the days when the world felt small and good — when a man could lean on a tire machine, wipe his hands on a rag, and know he was exactly where he was meant to be. Elton loved that work, loved those people, and loved the way that place stitched our community together. Long before his years with the school board, Fleming Canal Store was where he built a lifetime of memories, one conversation, one repair, one shared laugh at a time.
Through his actions and demeanor, Elton taught us the value of being there for our loved ones. He was more than a father, a friend, or a colleague — he was a beacon of love and laughter, a true testament to living life to the fullest, and an embodiment of generosity. His life lessons, laughter, and love will continue to carry us through our own journeys.
A Celebration of Life ceremony for Elton will be held on February 1, 2026, at 12PM-5PM at 4917 City Park St. We invite all who knew and loved him to join us in remembering and celebrating his remarkable life. The family is also intending to attend mass at 10AM, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Lafitte.
Elton Matherne will be profoundly missed. His life was a testament to kindness, love, and laughter. His impact was truly immense, touching so many during his time with us. A warm, caring soul, he will live on forever in the hearts of those he loved.
