Ellen's obituary

Our beloved Ellen, 47, passed away on January 23, 2022 after a valiant battle with colon cancer. She was surrounded by her family, friends, and loved ones on the days leading to her passing. She is survived by her loving husband Benjamin Maxon; beautiful daughter Morgan Kynoch; parents Tony and Donna Porcaro & Kathleen and Steve Kevlin; and brothers Michael, Mathew, David, Jeff and Ed. Anyone who knew Ellen, knew she was an avid outdoors-woman who spent much of her time basking in nature. She loved exploring and discovering new things with her daughter and husband.  On the weekends, you could most likely find her enjoying the simple pleasures in life that brought her joy.  She loved skiing, hiking with her dogs and friends, camping, traveling, painting, and enjoying live music. Helping others was innate to her being and she was loved by so many for her caring nature.

For over 20 years, Ellen worked as a nurse, serving a number of large, academic medical centers including University of Virginia Health System, Inova Health System as well as UCSF. She worked in a variety specialized areas such as emergency, oncology, cardiac care, medicine, surgery, step-down and intensive care units. At UCSF Ellen started as a bedside nurse and advanced to administrative roles, such as the Assistant Patient Care Manager and Interim Patient Care Manager on the High Acuity TCU, 14 Moffitt. Most recently, Ellen was an Outreach Nurse for the Office of Population Health & Accountable Care at UCSF.  She loved being part of a team and touched so many along her journey.

Following her diagnosis of cancer, Ellen began seeking a deeper connection to the Universe and her own spirit.  She developed a regular meditation practice and sought support from Spirit Rock, an incredible meditation center just outside of the city.   Ellen's spirit continues to be the brightest in the room.  Her heart was enormous and the unconditional love and acceptance she offered everyone she met was a true gift to us all.  She was the heart of her community and was known to many as "The General" for the way in which she brought people together and organized incredible experiences that will never be forgotten.  Ellen knew her spirit to be eternal and felt that she would still be with us long after she left her body.  Whenever you see a white butterfly, may you feel her spirit with you and find peace knowing that she is free to fly.
