Elizabeth's obituary
Elizabeth “Betty” Katherine Meyer, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 16, 2022. She was born in Englewood, NJ on February 1, 1928, and lived in Dumont, NJ. It was at Dumont High School where she met the love of her life, Ernest Arthur Meyer, who served in the Coast Guard during WWII from July 8, 1943 to April 25, 1946. After being discharged, they were married on June 17, 1948 in Manchester, CT. Soon thereafter, Elizabeth moved to Washington, DC working at the Pentagon while Ernest attended Georgetown University on the GI Bill.
After Ernest graduated, they returned to New Jersey in 1952 and settled in Harrington Park where they raised a family of six in a house that she absolutely adored located on Martha Road. Sadly, after waning health problems, Ernest passed away on October 17, 1981 followed by the death of her son Jonathan in 1990. Elizabeth moved to Cape Cod, MA in 1984 to Brewster then eventually to Harwich to take care of her mother, Elizabeth Greenleaf. She found fulfillment working as a dental assistant and finally retired at the age of 70.
Although Elizabeth experienced painful losses, she found the courage and strength to persevere. Her greatest joy in life was her family and she maintained a warm and loving home. During the 30+ years at the Cape, she also met many dear friends participating in social and community activities such as the walkie talkies, Red Hat Society, and Meals on Wheels. She also spent a lot of time together with her mother and sister, Janet Redl, and they often traveled to visit various countries. They were fondly referred to as the “golden girls” either arguing or laughing, or both when they were together.
Elizabeth will always be remembered, cherished, and honored with much love and affection. She left an indelible mark with her rosy disposition, a huge heart, frank and honest nature, and an unwavering optimism and belief that everything was going to be fine. She was the glue that held the family together. She would drive down to see her family whenever she had the chance until she was in her late 70s. Elizabeth especially loved having her family visit her at the Cape where all her children and grandchildren would spend their long summer days at Nauset Beach, Long Pond, Bank Street, Breakwater Beach, and eating at her favorite place, Hearth and Kettle.
Elizabeth was also an avid reader and you could always find her curled up on the couch reading the latest bestseller. During Elizabeth’s later years, we will fondly remember the funny stories she loved to tell. But more than that, we will also remember the person that she was: supportive, warm, kind, and generous to all people. She will forever live in our hearts and will be deeply missed. We will cherish her memory and never forget how lucky we all were to have known her.
Elizabeth is survived by her two siblings, Roy Archer and Janet Redl, her children Christine, Chip, Judy, Steven, and Christopher. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Elizabeth will be laid to rest at George Washington Cemetery and her remaining ashes scattered across the ocean and bay at Cape Cod that she loved so dearly.
