Elizabeth's obituary
Elizabeth "Annie" (Murphy) Hill, a loving mother, sister, and devoted friend, passed away on September 11, 2023, after boldly fighting her second battle with cancer. Born on January 30, 1960; Elizabeth led a life full of enthusiasm, courage, and unconditional love for everyone around her. She was a proud and nurturing mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and activist.
Elizabeth is survived by her sons, Matthew Hill of Raleigh, NC, James Hill (Kelly) of Sea Level, NC, their father Thomas Hill of Indianapolis, IN. Grandchildren Bradley Hill, Sarah Hill, Jamie Hill, and Anthony Hill. Sisters Cecelia Upchurch, Catherine Cracknell-Hill (Stephen), and David Murphy (Anthony Richert). Preceding Elizabeth in death were her mother, Patricia Murphy, and sister Emily Murphy, both of whom she held in the highest regard.
Elizabeth was a woman of intellect and perseverance. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from IUPUI, Indianapolis, IN in 1999. The pursuit of her degree spanned 15 years, persevering while raising a family. Receiving her degree was second only to her self-proclaimed highest achievement, of being a mother and grandmother.
Elizabeth’s spirit of service and kindness were evident in her roles as an attendee and lay minister in the United Methodist Church. Elizabeth was a woman of faith and spirit, giving of her time and resources. She was a financial donor and lifelong volunteer at St. Jude Children's Hospital, and an organizer at the Jesus Women Ministry. She embraced these roles with immense passion and dedication, further reflecting her empathetic and giving nature.
An enthusiast of everything chocolate and her favorite cuisine, “soul food", Elizabeth had a passion for life that extended to her hobbies and interests. From indulging in the melodies of The Beatles, Carole King, and Barbra Streisand, to enjoying wood carvings and watercolors on canvas, her tastes were as diverse as her vibrant personality. She loved above all, spending time with her children, grandchildren, siblings, nieces and nephews. She also cherished reading romance novels and volunteering as a telephone operator for St. Jude Children's Hospital. She was known for her love of Disney and Lifetime movies, music, romance novels and taking on all challengers for a game of Scrabble or Monopoly. She was passionate about certain causes, particularly St. Jude Children's Hospital and The Raleigh Breast Cancer Survivor Network. She devoted her time and efforts to those charities, among others throughout her lifetime.
Elizabeth was warm, funny, and hysterically cynical. She was known for being a soft and feminine soul, who radiated love and kindness. Her life was a testament to her belief that the show must go on, no matter the cards you are dealt. She was an inspirational cancer survivor of fifteen years and volunteered to help women battling breast cancer. Prior to her passing, she participated in clinical trials for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer. In hopes of developing new therapies to help others, long after her passing – just one of her many acts of selflessness.
Elizabeth leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, compassion, and unconditional love. She will be dearly missed by her loving family and lifelong friends, leaving behind a void that is difficult to fill. In her final days, Elizabeth asked of those who loved her, to quickly transition from sadness to celebration. Please join us in honoring her legacy by remembering how she made us laugh, and by celebrating a life well lived.
A quiet beachside memorial, with close friends and family, was held on Friday, September 15th, where a portion of her ashes were scattered. Our family would like to express sincere and deep gratitude for the many loving condolences we have received since our sister's passing. She is now at home, with our Lord.
