Ms. Dowdell was my teacher at Carleton Elementary School. She told me I was great before I believed it. She spoke to the leader in me. I thought about her today and I’m sad to know that she’s gone. I wish I had the chance to thank her.

Dear Vanessa/family your mom was one of the last of the Mothers on our Nashville block that I looked up too being of color as myself I admired her so much she was such a strong black woman in my eye sight as a young black girl just trying to figure things out in this world. I would have conversations with Ms. D It always touch me by her words, smile, Grace and compassions she showed when speaking and how she loved spending hours in her yard making it beautiful like herself. I’m blessed to have known such greatness RIH Queen Ms. D. From LaWanda Byrd(Sug) & Family ❤️🙏🏾💞
Dear Vanessa, Ariana, Jasmine and Jayden, Your mom, grandma and great-grandma believed and lived her life by these words: she loved her Lord, her family and her music. She was an enthusiastic and positive person, always willing to help others. I admired and looked up to her. She was a wonderful friend. First Church of Detroit was so blessed to have her as our choir director for 30 years. She guided us well in praising God with our music. She also guided us well in praising God by our lives. To celebrate her 25th year as our choir director Pastor Bill DeVries and his wife Criss composed and dedicated this song to Liz. The chorus went “Shape my spirit Lord, in pow’r and grace. In truth and beauty Lord, fill up my days.”
................And He did.❤️

Dear Vanessa and children--
I've pondered for days about the memories I have of your dear mother. She was not only a wonderful, beloved choir director for 30 years at 1st Church, with me as the accompanist, but she was also a loving friend, who I considered to be a part of my family. I could talk to her and share with her almost anything. She was so loved by everyone at 1st Church. We had lots of fun, and together shared the same love for classical sacred music, plus lots of gospel pieces, and under her tutelage and encouragement, we produced a CD!

She was a woman of strong faith, in spite of, I know, the many losses and sorrows she faced in life along the way.

I extend to you, Vanessa, my deepest heartfelt sympathies. Even though we had not been in touch a lot in the past few years, I thought about her a lot. She is at peace now, and I thank God for her presence in my life and for all the great memories I will take away always. Lovingly, Cheryl Van Tol
My deepest condolences. It was a pleasure to have known your mother. She was a beautiful soul. Prayers for strength and comfort during this time for your family. Love, Christina and Courtney Benjamin

Now she's directing an angel choir! I fondly remember being in her choir at First Christian Reformed Church. She was a great lady!
Aunt Liz birthday is January …
2003, Detroit Symphony Orchestra
Aunt Liz birthday is January 23, mine is 16th. As a birthday gift I treated Aunt Liz to see Leontyne Price (world renown vocalist) to heat a live performance in Detroit. Plus I purchased back stages so that Aunt Liz and Leontyne Price would exchange conversations...What a moment that I witness seeing 2 great music majors in one room. I remember Aunt Liz opened the conversation saying “how does a Leontyne Price come to Detroit? Leontyne Price said “ I am Leontyne Price.” “ A historic moment for me. Aunt Liz was so incredibly appreciative!
As we hold on tight we walk with the awareness that doing so won’t prevent them from slipping away, but it may create a bond so secure that it carries us the rest of the way.
Sending continuous prayers and much love to the family of our "Musical Maestro", Elizabeth Dowdell.
God hears our prayer.
