Elizabeth's obituary
Elizabeth Deal Smith, affectionately known as Liz, passed away on January 3, 2025, in Muncie, Indiana, at the age of 83.
Born on August 16, 1941, in Dubuque, Iowa, Liz lived a life filled with love, devotion, and an unwavering commitment to those she held dear. Throughout her life, she pursued various careers, but the common thread in all of them was her deep love for children. She had an incredible ability to connect with young people and never missed an opportunity to strike up a conversation with a child, even if just in passing.
Liz is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years, Richard (Dick) Smith; her daughter Rebecca (Becky) Hawrot; her grandchildren Hannah (Alex) Bullens, Klarysa Hawrot, and Jack (Ashlyn Hurley) Hawrot; and her cherished great-grandbaby Camryn Hawrot. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Flora Deal.
A woman of strong faith, Liz was a devoted member of the church throughout her life. She attended St. Patrick’s Episcopal while living in Michigan and later became a member of Holy Family Episcopal in Asheville, North Carolina. In Indiana, she worshiped at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Liz’s passions extended far beyond her career and faith. She was an avid knitter who found joy in creating baby blankets and prayer shawls for others. Her love for reading and playing games brought her countless hours of happiness. She also had a deep appreciation for flowers and was always ready to share sage advice on how to keep plants thriving. Her heart for animal rescue was boundless—her home was a sanctuary for feline friends, and she would have spent her entire savings on saving animals if given the chance. And of course, no one could forget her famous homemade Chex mix—a treat that will be dearly missed by those lucky enough to have enjoyed it.
Liz was a fiery and tenacious woman who never hesitated to share her thoughts while simultaneously loving those around her with tenderness and devotion. She stood by her family through every challenge and triumph—through suffering and heartache, victories and celebrations, graduations and milestones. Her presence was unwavering; she showed up for every holiday despite the miles between states and took eight-hour road trips just to watch a ball game or swim meet with her daughter and grandkids. She would drop everything to care for those she loved. She faithfully stood by her husband of 61 years.
Many people were fortunate enough to know Liz and experience her warmth, care, and spunky personality. But for those who called her "Nana," "Mom," or "Wife," the gratitude runs even deeper. To have been loved by Liz was to know steadfastness, joy, and unconditional support.
Liz, Mom, Nana—we miss you beyond words. Thank you for the countless ways you blessed our lives. What we wouldn’t give for another phone call, another hug, another birthday card from you. Rest in peace.
A Celebration of Life will be held on April 5, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 535 S 14th St., New Castle, Indiana. Friends and family are invited to come share a "Liz" story and enjoy a well-deserved reason to gather in remembrance of such a remarkable woman.
