Background
Throughout her life, Beth Berry believed in and practiced peacemaking. One of the places where she did this work in a particular, significant, and effortless way was in the library at Bethany Christian High School.
A nontraditional activist, our mother’s deep commitment to loving her neighbors near and far inspired her to promote social justice through friendship, community-based social change, and speaking truth to power with children’s books.
When Beth retired from Bethany, BCHS alum Sarah (Thompson) Nahar established the “Beth Berry Peace & Justice Award” to recognize a 12th-grader for their significant activism on peace and justice issues. Between 2006 and 2013, the award was presented at least six times, with awardees including Micki Kaufman, Meg Kennell, Jon Mark, Eva Lapp, Alena Yoder, and Sadie Gustafson-Zook.
We think the award was discontinued because it lacked sufficient financial support, and that is why, on the occasion of Beth’s passing, we are inviting contributions to re-establish the award to inspire new generations of young people to be part of God’s peace-making and justice-seeking mission, that peace may prevail on Earth.
The amount we are raising will also make it possible for us to donate children’s books about peace and social justice themes that Beth cared about to the Goshen Public Library and the Aschliman Peace Arts Collection at Goshen College. Contribute
