Elfie's obituary
Elfriede Johanna Kasun, known to all as Elfie, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2025, surrounded by her family.
Born in Hamburg, Germany, Elfie immigrated to the United States at the age of 18 with her sister, Erika, through Ellis Island. She settled in New York City, where she met a young Naval officer, James (Jim) Kasun. Jim became her best friend, her partner through life’s highs and lows, and the love of her life.
The couple married and later moved to Columbus, Ohio, where they raised three sons: Michael, Scott, and Daniel. Once their children were grown, Elfie and Jim made their home in Oregon, where they enjoyed hiking and time with friends. Elfie loved sewing, gardening, baking, and caring for her beloved dog, Wolfie. In later years, the couple returned to Columbus, where they embraced a slower pace surrounded by family and new friendships.
Elfie will be remembered for her brutally honest comments, her German accent that never faded, and her deep care for others.
She is survived by her husband, Jim; her children and their spouses, Michael and Michelle, Scott and Renee, and Daniel and Miranda; her grandchildren, Sierra, Adam, Maisie, Zachary, Jake, and Callan; as well as many dear friends and Wolfie.
Private arrangements are being made by the family. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations may be made to Feeding America, where Elfie volunteered and shared her passion for helping those in need.
