Nora's obituary
Eleanora (Nora) Kovacs Torontali, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully in her home on March 15, 2025.
Born on September 24, 1951, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Hungarian immigrants Frank and Mary Kovacs, Nora lived a life full of love and devotion to those she cherished. Known for her passion for volunteering, her deep affection for friends and family, and her unyielding desire to capture the beauty of life through film and video, Nora touched the hearts of all who knew her.
In her younger years, Nora was a talented ballet dancer and fencer. She grew up immersed in the Cleveland Hungarian scouting community. It was there that she met her future husband, "Johnny Angel", whom she married on December 4, 1971. Together, they raised three children, and Nora devoted herself to nurturing her family, building lifelong friendships, and dedicating her free time to her community. The Cleveland Hungarian community was an integral part of Nora's life and legacy. She volunteered countless hours and years both supporting and chairing the annual CSBK Cserkeszbal (Hungarian Charity Ball). However, summers spent with family and friends on the shores of Lake Chautauqua were some of her most cherished memories of her life.
Nora was a proud alumna of Beaumont High School (class of '69), John Carroll University (class of '73), where she earned a degree in history and communications, and the 33. sz. Szilagyi Erzsebet cserkesz csapat.
Nora leaves behind her loving husband, John Torontali; her daughters Suzanne (Balazs) Nemeth and Marianne Torontali (Nathan Ecker); and her sister Marika Kovacs Ryan. She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Frank Nemeth (15), Ella Nemeth (14), Jonah Ecker (13), Karl Nemeth (12), Oliver Ecker (10), Alexander Nemeth (9), Leo Ecker (8), and Emilia Ecker (5). Nora is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Mary Kovacs, and her beloved son, Jonathan Torontali.
The funeral mass will be held at Gesu Church in University Heights, Ohio, on March 22 at 10:00 AM. A reception following mass will be held, with the details to be confirmed shortly. All friends and family are welcome to join in celebrating Nora’s life and the many ways she touched the world. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Cleveland Hungarian Museum in her honor.
Nora’s legacy of love, kindness, and dedication will forever remain in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
