Eleanor's obituary
Obituary
Eleanor Steele White passed away on May 6, 2020 at the age of 89. She was born in New Haven, Connecticut on February 13, 1931, to James Steele and Pearl (King) Steele. She spent her formative years in South Boston, Massachusetts, and Old Saybrooke, Connecticut. Ellie attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Art and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Design. She was second in her class, and completed the 4-year program in 3 years, all as a single mom in the 1950’s.
Eleanor had a career as a clothing designer and tailor. Her designs were bought by Sachs Fifth Avenue and she had a prominent window display of her work in New York City. She worked as a tailor in New Jersey, at Hayne’s Department Store and Epstein’s Department Store.
Ellie married Stephen White on February 1, 1958, and they had a 62-year partnership.
After raising their children in Holmdel, New Jersey, Elle and Steve retired to Sunapee, New Hampshire. During this time, Ellie was the creative force behind many home renovations, travel adventures and artistic contributions to local causes. She loved winter and was an accomplished skier, and skied Mount Sunapee two months before her death.
Eleanor is survived by her husband, Stephen; her son Woody White of Newportville, Pennsylvania; her son Craig White of Phoenix Arizona; her son William White of New Jersey; and daughter Cassandra White of Georgetown, Massachusetts. She also survived by her four grandchildren: Jason of New Jersey, Kattie of Minnesota, Danielle of Phoenix, and Alexandria of Denver.
There will be a celebration of Ellie’s life at a future date, when all who loved her can attend. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a food bank for the people who are struggling in this difficult time.
