Eleanor's obituary
Abercrombie, Eleanor Kathleen died peacefully in Kelowna, BC on October 25, 2023.
Eleanor was born to John and Vera Kepper on September 23, 1934, in Flin Flon, Manitoba. From a young age she showed grit, determination, and a great sense of fun. She attended UBC (BPE) and the University of Wisconsin (M Kinesiology).
On graduating UBC in 1958, she married Philip Kueber, Q.C. and raised a family of four in Calgary: Kathryn, Philip Jr. (Christa), Heidi (Richard), and John (Katarina). It was a lively and energetic household and Eleanor turned every holiday dinner into a vibrant affair of games and rituals, and celebrated children’s achievements with “the red plate” at dinner. Eleanor was always social, somewhat capricious, and had a broad network of enduring, lifelong friends.
Eleanor was a woman of action - energetic, enthusiastic, and fearless - she did nothing by half-measures. A fierce competitor, whenever she entered a contest she was “in it to win it.” She loved golf (enjoyed a hole-in-one), cooking, weaving, bridge, travel, and displayed a flair for artistic activity. She published two books. An entrepreneurial spirit, for over a decade Eleanor was an active day-trader in the stock and options market, where she did well.
After her divorce from Phil (dec.) in 1990, Eleanor returned to Vancouver. She married Evan Abercrombie (dec.) and they settled in Roberts Creek, BC. She spent most of her later years in Kelowna, BC with her companion, Herb McGee.
Eleanor is survived by siblings Jack, Harvey, Ernest, and Caroline; grandchildren Phil, Ted, Olivia, Willa, PJ, Tori, Elin, Cadelle and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Eileen and her eldest son, Phil.
Whenever Eleanor was confronted with life’s obstacles and difficulties, she surmounted them with resilience and love from her family. Eleanor was memorable – if you met her, you did not forget her!
Eleanor has been cremated and her family will be hosting a private celebration of life.
