Eldine's obituary

It is with great sadness that the family announce the passing of Eldine Celestina Barnwell in St Vincent on Thursday, March 12, 2026 from Cardiovascular Disease. Eldine was affectionately known as Dine (pronounced "Deene"). She is survived by daughter Dr Patricia (Tricia) McClendon and her husband John; grandchildren Cassius Fenix Dennis McClendon, and Cielle Simone McClendon; sisters Denise Wilson (by adoption), Delta Alexander, Deborah Wilson and Marva Wilson ; brothers Rubert Wilson , Johnis Wilson, brothers-in-law Aster Barnwell, Osborne Barnwell, sisters-in-law Anna Barnwell-Primus, Yvette Wickham, Vernis Barnwell, Janice Barnwell, and their respective spouses; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends.

Predeceased by her husband Dennis Lennox Barnwell, parents Paul and Sylvia Wilson and brothers Boysin and Carl Wilson.

A memorial service will be held at Ashton Gospel Hall Church in Ashton, Union Island on Sunday, March 29th at 1:30 pm, starting with visitation from 1pm to 1:30pm. Internment will take place shortly after the service to her final resting place at Campbell Cemetery in Union Island.

Driven by the need to give back to her Union Island community, Eldine was one of the founders and former president of the Union Island Cultural Association (UICA) of Greater Toronto, that was incorporated on May 26th 1998 in Toronto, Canada. She was President of the UICA from 1998 until she started to develop health challenges shortly after the death of her husband Dennis, in 2014. The UICA was a cultural organization that was well known for its formal Annual Thanksgiving Day Brunches and Labor Day Picnics in Toronto, drawing hundreds of people, and raising tens of thousands of dollars for several causes, such as educational scholarships for students in Union Island. She was also a Retired Registered Nurse, and had worked as Head Nurse at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto, Canada for many decades until her retirement. She dedicated her life not only to caring for her patients, but numerous family members and friends. She was loved and will be greatly missed. The family extends its heartfelt appreciation to Nurse Onika Wilson who gave such compassionate care to Eldine during her final months
