Elaine's obituary
She was preceded in death by her parents, Landis and Elaine Lum; brothers Conrad (Rowena) Lum, Landis (Charla) Lum, Jr., Gerald (Lenore) Lum, Robert (Jamie) Lum, and Peter (Ginger) Lum; sisters Kehau (Gay) Ling, Heila (Joseph) Pahukula, and Eloise Lum.
Elaine was born the sixth of thirteen children to Landis and Elaine (Kamali’i) Lum in the spring of 1943. She attended Maryknoll Grade School with her older sister Kehau until the 6th grade. Elaine then went on to attend the Kamehameha School for Girls until the 10th grade before transferring to Waipahu High School, where she graduated in 1961.
She enlisted in the Navy with the WAVES in the fall of 1961 and trained as a Data Processing Technician throughout her naval career. She was stationed in Bainbridge, Maryland, San Diego, California, and Arlington, Virginia until 1968, when she left the Navy to return to Hawaii. After serving 27 years in various computer operations jobs at HMSA, she retired as a Help Desk Technician.
Family was important to Elaine, so she moved to Maryland in 2002 to be closer to her daughter and help raise her three young children, eventually returning to Hawaii in 2007. She treasured her three grandchildren and enjoyed all of their achievements with great pride.
“Auntie E” was a fun-loving, kind, and gregarious person, who made fast friends with everyone she met. Her unassuming nature made others feel at ease. She was a huge University of Hawaii sports fan, often attending UH volleyball, baseball and softball games, cheering on her home team. Although she was a fierce competitor in sports and in cards, her smile and laughter brought joy to all. However, it was her upbringing in a large Catholic family that instilled her faith in God and encouraged her to always “stick up for the little guy/gal.” She always inspired others with her positive attitude and warmth and will be dearly missed.
Memorial services will be scheduled at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis Hospice: https://www.stfrancishawaii.o….
