Edward's obituary

Edward Robert “Ed” Quigley passed away on December 16, 2023, at the age of 75 .

Ed was born on August 25, 1948, to Edward Frederick and Ruth Quigley in Brooklyn, NY. Ed was educated in the Catholic school system, from Little Flower primary school to St. John’s Prep High School. He received his bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University in 1970.

Growing up he had several jobs including pizza maker and soda jerk and retained none of those skills to teach his children or grandchildren. Ed spent his career working in insurance where he built up a wealth of knowledge he was able to use working with his son’s law firm, Edward J. Quigley P.C., for the final 21 years of his life.

Ed always said he had a perfect childhood. As a young man, he loved playing baseball in all its forms as well as watching his beloved Dodgers both in Brooklyn and when they left him for Los Angeles. One of his most prized possessions is the “Book of Ollies,” which describes in painstaking detail his team’s run to a softball championship. If you ever spoke with Ed and he said, as “my word as an Ollie and a Dodger fan,” you knew he was telling you the truth.

Ed was also quite the bowler for much of his life. He often told the story of a match he had with the legendary professional bowler Mark Roth, beating him three straight times. This led Mr. Roth to say, “You’re too good. I can’t beat you.”

To know Ed even a little was to meet the living embodiment of Yeats’s famous line, “There are no strangers here; only friends you haven’t yet met.” He simply had no enemies. He was kind and friendly in a way you just don’t see in many human beings. He genuinely loved talking to all people: clients, colleagues, friends, and strangers.

His family was his true joy. He loved nothing more than watching and celebrating his grandkids’ accomplishments. From dance recitals to sports games, there was nothing in their lives he didn’t love to watch and celebrate.

Ed is pre-decreased by his first ex-wife, Theresa Harnell, as well as his parents. Ed is survived by his three children, Edward Joseph Quigley, Erin Reiland, and Christine Quigley; his 8 adoring grandchildren, Katelyn, Connor, William, Brynna, Marisa, Addison, Blair, and Isla; two children-in-law, William Reiland and Elaine Cipriano; his two sisters, Patricia Maguire and Mary Goldman; and his former wife and loving caregiver, Kathryn Shanley.

There will be a memorial service on 10:30 a.m. on December 29, 2023, at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 70-01 Kessel Street, Forest Hills, NY as well as a celebration of Ed’s life immediately following at Verdi’s of Whitestone, 149-58 Cross Island Parkway Service Road, Whitestone, NY 11357.
