Ed's obituary

Edward Leslie Hawkinson went home to Jesus on December 31st, 2021, just one day before his 80th birthday.

Ed was born to Art and Marge Hawkinson on January 1st, 1942 in Bellingham, WA.  His newborn picture even made the local paper as the first baby of the new year born in Bellingham.

As a child, he enjoyed making forts in the woods, hanging out with the neighbor kids and joining his brother Larry in teasing their sister Ginny. As he grew, he got a job at a local cannery in Bellingham in order to pay for college at Western Washington University and the University of Washington.  Ed graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Architectural Design and later applied his architecture skills in his work at Tilton Truss and Woodinville Lumber.

Ed joined the military in 1966, bravely serving his country as a Sergeant during the war, and through God's grace and protection, returned home safely to his family.

Ed met his first wife, Catherine in the late 60's and fell in love with her while on a ski trip with their church. They married on August 1st, 1970 and went on to adopt 3 children, Tim, Jeff and Amy. They made their home in Bellevue, WA, where the family enjoyed many activities together, such as riding bikes, working in the yard, playing card games and spending time with family. Another large part of family life was participating in Ed's love of sailing. He had been introduced to sailing by his brother-in-law Dick Bell, and was instantly drawn to the pleasures and work that came with "boat life". In the 90's, he realized a dream by purchasing his very own sailboat, which he named Whitehawk. The family enjoyed many sailing trips around local Seattle waters and also got to experience some longer trips to the San Juan Islands and Canada. Life on the boat was carefree with many fond memories made with friends and family.

Ed and Cathy were blessed to have 35 years of marriage, until the Lord called Cathy home in March of 2005. Before her passing, they were able to experience the joys of being grandparents together. Their first grandchild, Calvin was born to Tim and Carrie Hawkinson in the year 2000. Ed was blessed with additional grandchildren born to son Jeff and Mary Hawkinson (Eli, Garrett and Blake Hawkinson) and to daughter Amy and Erik Hadlock (Josephine Hadlock).

In addition to being a hard-working and loving father, Ed showed his dedication to the Lord through leading men's bible study and prayer groups. Later in life, Ed used his passion for sailing to get involved with the YWAM missionary group. While serving as a boat captain on a mission trip in the Dominican Republic, he was introduced (via phone) to Elisa Adams, a friend of the leaders of the mission trip. Elisa and Ed bonded through their mutual love of sailing and also their understanding of what it was like to lose a spouse to cancer. Soon after he returned from the Dominican Republic, they spent some time together and it didn't take long for them to realize they wanted to get married and provide each other companionship through the later years of life.  They were married at Snoqualmie Falls on October 25th, 2008 in a gorgeous autumn setting, surrounded by many friends and family. The marriage with Elisa added more people to love, such as her two sons and their families. Nathan and Stephanie have 3 children (Zoe, Lexie and Sadie) and Kyle and Ashley have 2 children (Shem and Briar). Ed and Elisa purchased a home in Bothell, WA , where they hosted many family gatherings and watched their kids and grandchildren connect and grow with each other.

Throughout his entire life, Ed held an unwavering faith in God, which he shared with those who surrounded him. Ed joins Catherine and his parents Art and Marge in Heaven.  He is survived by his wife, Elisa Hawkinson, his children Tim, Jeff (Mary) and Amy (Erik), his siblings Larry (Norma Dean), Ginny (Stan) and Ken (Merletta), his step-children, Nathan (Stephanie) and Kyle (Ashley) and all of his grandchildren, Calvin, Eli, Zoe, Garrett, Lexie, Blake, Josie, Sadie, Shem and Briar.
