Edward's obituary

Edward J. McDonough, a dedicated professional, beloved family man, and lifelong Baltimore-area resident, passed away on January 12, 2025.

Edward was the cherished husband of Angela McDonough and the loving father of Amber Keyser, Matt Keyser, Chad McDonough, Heather Sentz, Cody Watters, and Seth Watters. He was a proud grandfather to five grandchildren and one great-grandchild, whose lives he enriched with his warmth, wisdom, and unwavering support.

Edward’s professional journey was marked by his passion for communication and service. Since September 3, 2003, he served as the Public Information Officer for the Maryland Department of Emergency Management in Reisterstown, MD. Before this role, he held the same position at the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development in Crownsville, MD, from 1998 to 2003. His career also included a distinguished 15-year tenure as a journalist, including 10 years with The (Baltimore) Sun, where he honed his storytelling and reporting skills.

A 1980 graduate of Northeastern University, Edward earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Arts and Sciences with a concentration in Journalism. He was an alumnus of Calvert Hall College High School in Towson, MD, graduating in 1975. Throughout his career, Edward pursued continued education and professional development, completing the Public Affairs and Information Technology Course at the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, the Advanced Public Information Officer course taught by FEMA’s National Fire Academy, and numerous National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses through FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute.

Edward’s commitment to public service extended beyond his official roles. As an instructor for FEMA’s Basic Public Information Course, he shared his expertise and contributed to the development of External Affairs training. His leadership and mentorship were invaluable in shaping future emergency management professionals.

Edward lived with his family in Towson, MD, where he embraced life with enthusiasm, kindness, and a steadfast dedication to his loved ones and community. His legacy will be remembered with deep gratitude by all who knew him.

A celebration of Edward’s life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in his memory to a cause close to his heart.
