Eduardo's obituary

Eduardo Calaguas of Cape Coral, Florida peacefully passed away on October 1st, 2020, at the age of 83. Eduardo, known as "Waldo" to friends and family, was born on July 8th, 1937, in Dagupan City, Philippines, to Demetrio Calaguas and Milagros Fenoy Calaguas. He was one of 7 children and is survived by his youngest sister, Lumen Fenoy Frediles, and youngest step-brother, Raul Del Prado Calaguas.

Waldo grew up and struggled during World War II in the occupied Philippines. He shared his memories often of the cruelty of war, but also of the grace of his grandmother, aunts, uncles, and cousins who helped him make it through. He especially praised his eldest brother, Rafael Calaguas, for helping him survive the harsh occupied years. He then proudly joined the U.S. Navy in 1958 and served in the Bay of Pigs, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Vietnam conflict. After 10 years of service to the U.S. Navy and to his country, he was honorably discharged and made a home in Baltimore, Maryland where he met the love of his life, Virginia. Waldo also built a brotherhood and extended family of other Filipinos who served alongside of him in the Navy and were also starting their own families in Baltimore. This tight-knit community always helped one another through the years and remains extremely close to this day. Waldo was a devoted husband and a loving father to their two children, who he adored, Carla and Edsar.

Waldo spent the majority of his career as a crane electrician working for the Maryland Port Authority at the Locust Point Marine Terminal in Baltimore. He was a true renaissance man and loved being in nature and the outdoors. He was a self-taught musician and some of his hobbies included: karaoke, tennis, fly fishing, tying flies, sewing, cooking, Taekwondo, trap shooting, gardening, and collecting and restoring antique tube radios. His most cherished activity was "cutting the rug" with his forever dance partner, Virginia, to the 50's music they loved and danced to with their beloved friends both in Baltimore and Cape Coral.

Being a hands-on and active grandfather to his three grandchildren, Alexa, Kyle, and Destiny were another one of the greatest joys in Waldo's life. He was the most kind and giving grandfather and would do anything for his grandkids. The "family" was everything to Waldo, and he cherished everyone in it. He was also blessed to have cousins, nieces, nephews, and an extended loving family all over the world including Arizona, Canada, California, Florida, Maryland, New York, Virginia, West Virginia, London, and the Philippines. He had a gift for hospitality and for helping others, he knew how to embrace life, and lived it to the fullest. Waldo loved his family, his country, and lived the American Dream!

Waldo is survived by his wife and lifelong dance partner of 55 years, Virginia Calaguas, daughter Carla Hunt and husband David F. Hunt, II, son Edsar B. Calaguas, grandchildren Alexa Calaguas Brown and husband Sam Brown, Kyle Calaguas, and Destiny Hunt.

A small private family Catholic service will be held. In lieu of flowers please plant a tree, visit a loved one or go fishing and enjoy the outdoors in remembrance of Waldo.
