Edgar Raymond Underwood Jr., lovingly known as "Grumps" by his family and friends, passed away peacefully on Saturday April 5, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, unwavering faith, and deep devotion to his loved ones.

Born on April 26, 1931, he was the son of the late Edgar and Odessa Underwood.

A proud and dedicated employee of the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), Edgar devoted over 30 years of his life to serving his state with integrity and grit before retiring as the Head of Location and Survey for the NCDOT. He was the kind of man who believed in doing things the right way—the first time—and who found great pride in a hard day’s work.

Beyond his profession, Edgar was a man of God whose quiet strength and enduring faith guided his every step. He led his family by example, never hesitating to lend a hand, offer wisdom, or share a chuckle when it was needed most.

He is proceeded in death by both his parents, Edgar and Odessa Underwood as well as his 1st and 2nd wives, Betty Atkins Underwood and Barbara O. Underwood. 

He is survived by his son, Edgar Underwood III, and daughter, Julia Underwood. Grumps was a treasured grandfather to Carmen Rose Carver, Lane Hochswender, Vickie Hochswender, Jake Hochswender, and Adrien Michael Underwood. He also leaves behind two great-grandchildren, Samantha Marie Robbins and Cora Jean Carver, who will grow up hearing stories of the kind, steadfast man who loved them dearly.

To know Grumps was to love him. His gruff charm, sharp wit, and warm heart left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was a rock to his family, a dependable friend, and a true southern gentleman who never met a stranger.

He will be missed more than words can express—but his legacy lives on in the family he cherished and the values he instilled.

Rest easy, Grumps. We’ll carry you with us always.
