My deepest condolences to Eddie’s Family.

Eddie and I were high school classmates at R. E. Hunt High School in Columbus Mississippi.  Class of 1967. We were also best friends.

Eddie S. Washington was not just a name but a pivotal figure in Mississippi State University's history. His life is intertwined with the university's journey toward racial equality and stands as a testament to his unyielding courage and determination. His life, a testament to resilience, leadership, and academic excellence, left an enduring mark.

Eddie was born into a time of racial unrest; his journey was marked by extraordinary courage. A student at MSU, when the tragic assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. shook the nation, Eddie responded with action. He became a founding member of Afro-American Plus (AA+), a pioneering Black student organization that would shape the campus landscape. His leadership extended beyond AA+, as he was elected the first Black President of the YMCA at MSU. This progressive organization, a beacon of unity amidst division, saw Eddie as a symbol of hope and change. His election as the first Black student to a campus-wide leadership position was a monumental step forward, paving the way for future generations of Black leaders. Breaking barriers was a hallmark of Eddie's life.

Eddie's academic achievements were equally remarkable. He shattered barriers as the first Black Aerospace Engineer to graduate from Mississippi State, a feat that placed him among a select few in the nation at the time. His career as a highly successful software engineer was a testament to his intelligence, dedication, and adaptability. Always a Pioneer, Eddie continued to give back to Mississippi State, becoming one of the founding members of the Mississippi State Alumni Association Black Alumni Advisory Council and a Sponsor of Black Alumni Weekend.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Eddie was a cherished friend and mentor. His infectious laugh, brilliant mind, and kind heart made him an unforgettable presence. Countless individuals were inspired by his wisdom, courage, and unwavering spirit.

His passing on July 21st has left an immeasurable void. The outpouring of grief and admiration is a testament to his profound impact on the lives of those who knew him.

As we mourn the loss of this extraordinary man, let us celebrate his life and legacy, a tapestry woven with threads of leadership, intellect, and compassion. As we mourn the departure of this giant among us, let us celebrate his extraordinary life and his profound impact on Mississippi State University and beyond. Eddie's story is a powerful reminder of the progress and work that still lies ahead. Let us honor his memory by striving for a more just and equitable society.

Eddie Washington was a giant among us. His absence will be deeply felt, but his spirit will live on through the countless lives he touched. May he rest in eternal peace. We pray for the Blessings of Peace and Comfort for this family.
