Easwara's obituary

Obituary – Dr. Bhoothalingom, M.D.

Circa 2006

Dr. Easwara "Dr. B" Bhoothalingom (84 years old) passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, November 9, 2022; his wife and family were with him. He will be greatly missed; and a day won't pass that we aren't thinking of him.

Dr. B was born in Nagercoil, India on March 18, 1938. From an early age, he knew he wanted to become a doctor. He attended Stanley Medical School on a full scholarship and graduated in 1961. Shortly after graduation, he accepted a position with Indian Railways as their onsite physician providing healthcare for workers laying new track in the Indian jungles. In 1963, he immigrated to the United States, arriving in New York on his way to St. Francis Hospital to begin his internship. He completed his residency in psychiatry in 1968. Driven by a passion for the field of psychiatry, Dr. B went on to complete a second residency in Forensic Psychiatry (combining both law and mental health).

During his internship, he met his future wife Susan and they married in 1965. Over the next several years, he and his family, including a son (Carl) and a daughter (Anita), moved several times. The family took up residence in Nevada in 1980 after accepting a position as a staff psychiatrist with the State of Nevada.

During the next 30+ years, he held several psychiatric positions, including Chief Psychiatrist with Nevada Mental Health, Truckee Meadows Hospital, Washoe County Jail, Senior Psychiatrist with Nevada State Prison, private practice, locum tenens, as well as Director of the Better Way (a private counseling/treatment center).

Dr. B prided himself on being a stellar teacher, mentor, and coach. To foster that desire, he accepted an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry position with the University of Indiana School of Medicine, and later as a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry with the University of Nevada School of Medicine in Reno.

Throughout his career, Dr. B received numerous accolades from State agencies commending him on his leadership and performance.

"Few of us dared to hope… fewer still entertained any hope of a positive outcome. You [Dr. B] stepped in and immediately effected change… We owe you a debt of gratitude."

-1985 Department of Human Resources, State of Nevada

"He [Dr. B] was a source of leadership and comfort with difficult conditions. His sacrifices are an example of heroism that often goes unrecognized."

-1987 Nevada Division of Mental Hygiene and Mental Retardation

"His [Dr. B] performance touched more people's lives in the course of a year than people do in a lifetime as Senior psychiatrist."

-1988 State of Nevada Meritorious Award

He loved to spend time with family and ensured his leisure activities were family inclusive. These included tennis, soccer, traveling, outings to the beach and ocean, reading, magic tricks, and trips back to India to be with parents and siblings. Dr. B enjoyed the warmer weather, which allowed him to enjoy playing tennis all year round.

Dr. B always said his greatest joy in life was being the greatest husband and father to his family. He was a consummate professional and caregiver; always putting others first. He brought hope and comfort to those he touched and we will be forever better for it. He was an inspiration to us all and will be remembered for generations.

Dr. B is survived by his wife, Susan; children, Carl (Deanna wife), and Anita (Kevin partner); Grandchildren; Timothy, Jacob, Gabrielle, and Kaitlynn.
