Earl taught me how to ride my first horse & got me two ponys to ride. (An appaloosa & a pinto). Earl went with me to the fall fairs in Neustadt & Mildmay, to show the horses.

Earl used to take me fishing. There's at least two trips I can recall.
These trips were a real adventure from a tractor pulling a truck box trailer with a boat hanging out the back.
(Earl didn't have a license for many years. But he had a little grey Ford tractor that he got around with.) The first trip we got a bit cold & wet as it rained on our way home. I remember he told me to get under the boat to stay dry but as I recall I still ended up with a cold.

Our 2nd trip he got a truck cap to fit the trailer. This was much more comfortable. Earl made a bed at the front with some planks. This allowed the boat to fit in under the planks.
We travelled all the back roads stopping at a few favorite fishing spots along the way to Hazel & Bruce's.

Between mom & Earl they bought me a few barbie dolls which I have kept & cherish.

The last fishing trip Earl & I took was in 2013. He took me to a couple of his favourite spots near Lucknow. One spot we could see a big trout within inches of our hooks. No matter how we tried to get this fish's attention he would not bite. We gave up & went to another spot where he caught one. Although, I did not catch anything I was enjoying our time together.

More recently, Earl made me a wooden well with the help of his Lucknow friend. (I forget his name.)

I have many memories that have come to mind in the last few weeks. One such memory I was reminded of the last time I spoke to him via zoom while he was in the hospital. He knew I was feeling bad about him leaving & he said "Smile & be Happy...that's all I can do"

I had forgotten how he used to say those words, just as he had always said them to me when I used to confide in him about things that used to bother me or make me upset.

I'm gonna try to honor those words by thinking about how much better he made my childhood by being in it...because that always makes me smile.
Dad loved to fish. The last time I was able to go fishing with him was Fathers Day in 2018. He wasn't feeling the best that day, but he came out along with Carol, my brother Steven, my boyfriend John and I. That day my brother chased me around with worms just like we were kids and it made my dad so happy to see. It felt like old times again. Then John got too close to the slippery rivers edge and fell in. Dad laughed so hard. I have so many memories fishing with my dad growing up (although most times were spent with me getting my line caught in leaves and dad having to untangle it). It was one of his favourite things to do, and I look forward to taking my son fishing one day and teaching him what my dad taught me.

I love you and miss you dad. Xoxo Stacey
