Earl's obituary

Earl Eugene Porter (Gene or Geno) 72, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2023 in the presence of his three beloved children and loved ones.

Gene was born on December 20, 1950 in Portsmouth, OH where he was raised with his four siblings.

He went on to serve in the US Navy in the Philippines during the Vietnam war. Following his naval service, Gene worked in construction for Local 181 in Ashland, KY and Local 18 in Columbus, OH.

Gene was known by family and community members as the “man who would give you the shirt off his back”- generously giving to the needs of many.

While Gene took much entertainment in the adventures of life- from motorcycle rides with his three sons, risky crane operating in his trade, to rafting the New River Gorge- he found the most enjoyment in the simple pleasures of life. He sought no need for material items but found the most contentment in conversations with family or sitting on his front porch of his Grant St. home. Despite life’s challenges, Gene remained a calm and supporting force to those around him reminding us some of life’s greatest moments are sometimes found in the smallest.

Gene is survived by three of his children: Stacy, Chase and Heath Porter. He is also survived by his sister Sue, and brothers Paul, Charles and Ed. He leaves behind his grand-daughters: Sydney Spence, Niya Porter, and Jocelyn Porter.

Gene is preceded in death by his son Paul Porter and his parents: Paul and Betty Porter .
