Earl Max Vansandt, M.D.
1937-2016
Max passed away December 19th in Scottsdale, Az. next to those who loved
him most. Born July 29, 1937 in Lee's Summit, Mo. to Vernon Decker and
Ruby Vansandt, Max was smart and witty and was an outstanding student.
He excelled in academics, first chair saxophone and many other achieve-
ments, including class clown and skilled prankster. He was a member of the
First Christian Church and member of the Order of the Demolay, further
distinguishing him as a fine young man. Max received his undergraduate
and medical degrees from the University of Missouri and married his Lee's
Summit High School sweetheart, Jean McFarland.
With his young family, he completed his internship at General Hospital
in Torrance, Ca., then was drafted and chose the Air Force where he was
stationed at Amarillo AFB, Texas for two years as Medical Captain and
honorably discharged. He traveled back to Los Angeles for his residency
in orthopedics working with the prestigious Kerlan - Jobe Sports Medicine
Group and the professional sport teams LA Dodgers and Kings.
Four years later in 1969, Dr. Vansandt led his family north to begin his
private practice in Bellevue, Wa. establishing Overlake Orthopedic Fracture
Center and privileges at Overlake, Evergreen and Swedish Hospitals. He
worked hard to not only fix many broken bones, but to heal and make people
laugh, including patients and families, nurses and staff and many fellow
colleagues and friends. Max retired in 1995.
With family and friends he enjoyed tennis, skiing, scuba, fishing, motor-
cycles, golf, time between Seattle and Scottsdale, and traveling the world.
He is survived by his partner Martha Gibson, his children Linda (Mike),
Greg, and Lori (Nate), two special grandchildren, Remy White and Devon
Henning, and his great-grandson, Christopher Winsick, his sister Verna Lee
Warren and numerous nieces, cousins and many friends.
