Tom and I attended the graduate study at A U in 1983. We visited his brother-in-law , Dr Yang in Cherry Hill, NJ. Tom drove the ‘76 Nova from Auburn to Cherry Hill (none stop 16 hrs, except refueling 3 times on I-85). There were Jerry Wu of IE department and myself as free ride passengers in the back seats. From 6:00am to ~9:30pm, we talked and talked about future…. In the next few days, Tom and I visited NY city, Virginia caves, and Playboy casino , which turned into Trump Plaza in Atlantic City, That was unforgettable winter season of1983.

Tom was a very kind and warm hearted person and was a great scientist as well! Back to early 90s, I fortunately worked under Tom for 2 years. What I learned from Tom laid a solid foundation for my future career. THANK YOU TOM, you will always live in my heart!

I am saddened to learn of the passing of uncle Chen. He and auntie Emily were extremely kind and supportive to me when I was in Maryland. I enjoyed very much having conversation with uncle Chen every time I visited them. Those memories will always be in my heart. My deepest condolences to auntie Emily, the family members and friends.

My brother and I got the news of Uncle Chen’s passing and were shocked at the same time. We know Uncle Chen and Auntie Emily through our father. The three of them were college classmates. I was impressed by Uncle Chen’s kindness, humor, generosity, wisdom and passion not only to science but also to living. We enjoyed several times of chat at a tea-specialized restaurant in Tainan, Taiwan. I still remember that among all the famous “snacks” in Tainan, he especially loved a kind of rice cake (碗粿). Although not being able to meet up very often due to distance, Uncle Chen gave me so much inspiration and care. All the wonderful memories will be kept in my heart forever.
With love,
Dawn Yen
