Skip's obituary
Skip, a lifelong resident of Centralia and graduate of Centralia High School, starred in football and wrestling for the Tigers and eventually played football at Ricks College in Rexburg, ID and Brigham Young University in Provo, UT. Skip loved sports, especially football, but his biggest love was his children. He married Raelene Robinson (Mathias) in 1986, and together, they had five wonderful children: Jillian King, Shay McElvain, Lara Hawks, Calla McElvain, and Natalya McElvain. Skip loved spending time with his big family (immediate and extended) and his big-heart and goofy sense of humor made him beloved by all. He enjoyed singing and dancing, and did not shy away from being the center of attention.
Throughout his life, Skip held several different occupations, but the job he most loved was Coach. Skip had a passion for coaching youth sports. His massive frame often towered over the athletes he coached, but behind that was a gentle demeanor that connected well with the youth he served and loved.
Skip also loved to cook (and eat!). He was famous for his tater tot casserole but could make just about anything. He enjoyed cooking for others and seldom missed an opportunity to feed someone in need of a meal. Skip was also an avid cribbage player and could play with the best of them. He was a friend to all and made an impact on others wherever he went.
Skip is preceded in death by his mother and father as well as his older sisters, Linda Johnson and Doris Matthews. He is survived by his former spouse, children, 11 grandchildren: Shilo Hawks Jr., Briar King, Clyde Hawks, Beryl Hawks, Cameron McElvain, Jerry Hawks, McCoy Hawks, Evan McElvain, Kaia Barajas, Porter McElvain, and Mitch Hawks, sister: Debra McCoy, brothers: David Hansen, Daniel Hansen and Dennis McElvain and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
A memorial service will be held to remember Skip on Saturday, August 7th, 2021 at 11:00 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Centralia (2801 Mount Vista Rd. Centralia, WA 98531). A potluck luncheon will immediately follow. All are welcome to attend, but please be considerate of the health and safety of others.
