Duane's obituary

Duane Karnes, 52, passed away on February 26, 2026, in Apple Valley, Minnesota. Born on January 28, 1974, and raised in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, he lived a life shaped by connection, a sense of curiosity, and a deep appreciation for the world around him.

He worked as a mechanic for Delta Airlines, where his natural ability and hands-on approach showed every day. He had a way of taking things apart, understanding how they worked, and putting them back together — something that wasn’t just part of his job, but part of who he was.

But those details only tell part of the story. It’s hard to fully put into words who he was. Duane was the success story to those who grew up close to him, overcoming early challenges with growth and resilience that was inspiring and defined his character and identity. That identity morphed over time and many knew him as a musician, an athlete, trailblazer, and explorer.

He had a deep love for exploring and for the moments that made life feel bigger. Duane traveled all over the world, always looking for the next place to discover, with a sense of curiosity and appreciation for life that was contagious. You could almost expect that when he called, he was doing so from a far-off place; often sent there to fix a plane no one else could.

Duane’s love for exploring carried into so many parts of his life. He found joy in the outdoors and in the experiences he shared with others — hiking, biking, climbing mountains, swimming in the ocean, camping under the stars, and sitting around a fire. No matter where he was, he carried that same appreciation for life with him.

The Boundary Waters held a special place in his heart — where he found both excitement and a quiet sense of peace. It was one of his favorite places, whether canoeing through the water, cooking over the fire, or simply taking it all in. He loved it just as much on his own as he did sharing it with others.

But what truly made Duane unforgettable was the way he connected with people.

Duane had a way of showing up when it mattered most. He brought light into people’s lives — often without even realizing it — simply by being who he was. His quiet demeaner was complemented by action and impact. His spirit pushed others to see more, do more, and experience life more fully.

He valued conversation, connection, and authenticity. He had a way of making people feel seen and understood. Whether through long talks or simple, everyday check-ins, he stayed present in the lives of those he cared about. He traveled far and wide to connect with friends, whether it be for an afternoon or for several weeks off the beaten path for a new adventure.

He encouraged people to go, to try, to experience — to not wait. Because of him, many lived a little bigger, took chances they might not have taken, and created memories they will carry with them forever.

That kind of presence is rare. That kind of person is unforgettable.

Duane will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his appreciation for the world, and the meaningful connections he built with so many people along the way. His impact will continue to live on in the lives he touched.

He will be deeply missed. His memory will live on in quiet moments, shared stories, and the paths still left to explore. A service will be held in his honor on May 9 at 1pm at the Manitowoc Elks Lodge #687; 1807 N. Rapids Road, Manitowoc, WI 54220.

In honor of Duane, and the place that meant so much to him, donations may be made to Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness.
