Dr. Zachary's obituary

Dr. Zachary Owens passed away July 17th after a short fight with a terminal illness. He leaves behind a legacy as an accomplished Sociologist with renowned research in sexual identity formation, homophobia, and masculinity. Dr. Owens was a stalwart friend, husband, family member, advisor, college instructor, and loved by all.

Zach grew up in Liberty, South Carolina, where he attended grade school. He was elected Student Body President, named class Valedictorian, and was highly active in student activities and clubs. Zach went on to attend the College of Charleston in the Honors College, and earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Sociology and a minor in Biology.

After his undergraduate studies, Zach relocated to Colorado to be close to the mountains he loved so much. Zach continued his dream of becoming an academic scholar by attending the University of Colorado at Boulder, earning his PhD in Sociology in 2015. Dr. Owens loved teaching and went on to be an instructor in the Honors Program at University of Colorado at Boulder. For over a decade he enriched the lives of many young adults, educating them in Social Equality, Gender Studies, and Social Problems. Dr. Owens also published articles in The Journal of Homosexuality and Sexuality and Culture, both related to his doctoral research.

Beyond teaching and academia, Dr. Owens continued to enrich the lives of his friends and family, bringing smiles to anyone in his presence – his laugh and smile illuminated the room. Dr. Owens’ greatest passion in life was travel. In a few short years he visited many different cultures and countries in 5 of the 7 continents. His dream was to visit all 7 and celebrate with a transglobal flight home.

Dr. Owens is preceded in death by his father, Hershel, and his beloved cat, Josie. Zach is survived by his husband, Tim Lacyk of Denver, his mother Kaye and brother Josh [wife Shawna and two daughters, Campbell and Kennedy] of Liberty, South Carolina, his sister Natasha Matthews [husband Madison and two daughters, Kaily and Emily] of Rome, Georgia, as well as many friends and family over the world.
