Background

Service to others has long been a defining thread in Willa’s life and family. Her father, Dr. Edmund Good, cared for patients through his medical practice, often making home visits that brought care directly to families in need. Her mother, Willa Watkins Good, devoted her life to nursing, modeling compassion, professionalism, and dedication to patient care.

Growing up in this environment, Willa was surrounded by examples of what it meant to care for others. From accompanying her father on patient visits as a child to later working alongside him as a nurse at Victory Lake Campground, she learned early that healthcare was not simply a profession—it was a calling rooted in service and responsibility to others.

That commitment extended throughout the family. Willa’s younger sister, Sylvia Good, served with the FDNY Emergency Medical Service, where she rose to the rank of Lieutenant. As Lt. Good, she responded to emergencies across New York City and served as a first responder during the events of September 11, 2001, continuing the family’s deep tradition of public service in times of crisis.

Willa’s dedication to healthcare and education also influenced the next generation. Her daughter Erica attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing and went on to work as a nurse for many years, continuing the family’s connection to the nursing profession. Her younger daughter Megan also spent many years working in healthcare in a variety of roles, contributing to patient care and healthcare systems in her own way.

Across generations—from physicians and nurses to emergency responders and healthcare professionals—the family’s story reflects a shared commitment to caring for others. This tradition of service shaped Willa’s life, her work as a nurse and educator, and the legacy that continues through those who follow in that path.

To honor that legacy, the Doswell For Good Foundation was established. The name carries special meaning: “For Good” reflects Willa’s maiden name, Good, while also expressing the purpose that defined her life’s work—to do good in the world through care, education, and service. Joined with her married name, Doswell, the foundation represents the full arc of her life and the values she carried forward.

Through the Doswell For Good Foundation, this legacy continues—carrying forward a multigenerational commitment to healthcare, service, and compassionate care for others.
