Joe's obituary
Dr. Joseph E. Burks, an esteemed husband, father, grandfather, and admired physician, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2023. He dedicated his life to supporting his family, and serving his community through his medical practice, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by many.
Born in Great Falls, Montana in 1945, Joseph grew up in Garland, Texas, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of North Texas. He then received his medical degree in 1973 from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, where he also completed his Internal Medicine residency in 1976, as well as a Fellowship in Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine in 1978.
Shortly thereafter, he moved to Victoria, Texas, where he founded Crossroads Pulmonary and Sleep Disorders Clinic. Dr. Burks specialized in pulmonary disease and sleep medicine and was a distinguished member of the American College of Chest Physicians and the American Sleep Society. In 2012, Strathmore’s Who’s Who Registry recognized him for his outstanding contributions and achievements in healthcare. David Brown, former CEO of Citizens Medical Center, once described him as “one of the best pulmonologists in the area,” as quoted in The Victoria Advocate.
Joseph married the love of his life, Cynthia ‘Sindy’ Burks, on March 23, 1991, in Victoria, Texas. Together, they built a loving blended family, including sons Andrew Burks and wife Sammie of Houston, TX, Colby Burks and wife Jamie of Cypress, TX, Aaron Burks and wife Jennifer of Converse, TX, Levi Burks and wife Jessica of Kingsport, TN, Ross Burks of Richmond, TX, Jeremiah Burks and wife Maria of Round Rock, TX and Kaleb Burks and wife Dairien of Jarrell, TX.
Joseph found great joy in the simple pleasures of life and had a love of the outdoors, gourmet cooking, and sporting a collection of Harley Davidson attire. In his spare time, he busied himself with a collection of coins, gems, horses, chihuahuas, and exotic birds.
He lovingly partnered with Sindy in providing a home for several of her family members including her mother, Mary Moore, brother Michael Colboch and sister Susan Montana as well as several friends of their sons.
He is survived by his brother Roger Burks and wife Patti of Dallas, TX, 7 sons, as well as 16 grandchildren and 1great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his father, Alvie Burks, mother Adelaide Burks, and wife Sindy Burks. Since his passing he has also been reunited with his twin brother, Dr. James K. Burks, who passed away on January 22, 2025.
Dr. Joseph E. Burks will be remembered for his hard work, unwavering and innovative commitment to medicine, his love for his family, and his passion for life. His legacy will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him.
