Dr. Ghulam Haider's obituary

In Loving Memory of Dr. Ghulam-Haider Aasi (September 1942–March 2025)

Dr. Ghulam-Haider Aasi, a distinguished scholar, interfaith leader, and beloved educator, passed away on March 31, 2025, at the age of 82 in Evanston, Illinois. His life was a testament to the power of education, dialogue, and compassion in bridging divides and fostering understanding among diverse faith communities.

Born in Pakistan, Dr. Aasi pursued advanced studies in the History of Religion, earning his Ph.D. from Temple University. Dr. Aasi served as the founding chair of the History of Religions department at American Islamic College (AIC) in Chicago. Under his leadership, AIC became a vital institution for critical scholarship in Islamic history, philosophy, and religion, including interfaith education, offering programs that attracted students from diverse backgrounds. His contributions were commemorated in 2021 with a “Lifetime Achievement Award,” recognizing his lasting impact on the college's mission and community.

He dedicated over three decades to teaching at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC), from 1984 until his retirement in 2018. Dr. Harold Vogelaar, Dr. Mark Thomsen, and Dr. Aasi worked together on bringing the mission and vision for A Center for Christian-Muslim Engagement for Peace and Justice into realization with support from the Kolschowsky family and then president, Dr. Echols. In addition to his tenure at LSTC, Dr. Aasi co-designed and co-taught numerous courses on Islam and Christian-Muslim relations at Catholic Theological Union (CTU) with Dr. Scott Alexander, emphasizing mutual respect and understanding.

Since 1986, Dr. Aasi was an integral member of the Islamic Foundation North (IFN) community in Libertyville, IL. He established the curriculum for IFN’s Sunday school and taught and championed adult religious education for many years. In honor of his longtime commitment to his community, a lifetime of selfless dedication, Dr. Aasi was awarded the “Outstanding Service Excellence Award,” in April 2022.

Dr. Aasi's commitment to interfaith dialogue extended beyond academia. He was a key figure in the Conference for Improved Muslim-Christian Relations, an initiative that began in 1985 and aimed to promote mutual understanding between these communities through joint events and collaborative efforts.

His scholarly work included significant publications such as Muslim Understanding of Other Religions (1991) and a contribution to Peace-building by, between, and beyond Muslims and Evangelical Christians (2009), reflecting his dedication to fostering respectful and informed interfaith conversations.

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to interfaith understanding, Dr. Aasi received the Nostra Aetate Award from the Archdiocese of Chicago. This honor underscored his role as a bridge-builder and his unwavering commitment to promoting peace and understanding among diverse religious communities.

Dr. Aasi is survived by his wife and 5 children, and is mourned by countless students, colleagues, and friends whose lives were enriched by his teachings and example. His legacy continues to inspire those who strive for a more inclusive and compassionate world. The communities he served, especially at AIC, LSTC, CTU, and Islamic Foundation-North, will carry forward his legacy of learning, connection, and peace. May his memory be a blessing, and may his contributions to interfaith dialogue and critical scholarship continue to inspire future generations.
