Obituary for Dr. Christian Chukwuma Onwudiwe Sr.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dr. Christian Chukwuma Onwudiwe Sr., who departed this life on August 14, 2024, at 4:00 pm at St. Mary’s Hospital in Umuowa, Orlu, Imo State, Nigeria. He was 72 years old.
Born on April 9, 1952, in Lagos, Imo State, Nigeria, Dr. Onwudiwe Sr. lived a life marked by remarkable achievements and unwavering dedication to his faith, family, and community. Fondly known as "Dr. O.," he was a distinguished Criminal Justice Professor at Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio, where he served with distinction since 1999.
Dr. Onwudiwe Sr. was a man of many talents and passions. He was a professional soccer player in his early years, a respected author, an entrepreneur, and a military veteran who served his country with honor. He was also a philanthropist, always extending a helping hand to those in need. A devout man of God, Dr. Onwudiwe Sr. guided others with wisdom and compassion throughout his life.
Dr. Onwudiwe Sr. pursued an impressive academic journey, earning two bachelor’s degrees and two master’s degrees from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He furthered his education by obtaining a doctorate in Political Science from Howard University, a testament to his commitment to knowledge and teaching.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and service that will continue to inspire all who knew him. Dr. Onwudiwe Sr. is survived by his sons, Christian Chukwuma Dikenafai Onwudiwe Jr. and Justin Onwudiwe, his daughter, Anna (Adaugo) Onwudiwe, and his beloved wife, Chidimma Onwudiwe. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Christiana Onwudiwe, Phoenix Onwudiwe, and Lennox Savon.
Dr. Onwudiwe Sr. was a man who loved deeply and was deeply loved by many. His absence leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those he touched. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
