Background

Dr. Agnes McGregor was a passionate educator who served children, particularly those from vulnerable communities, throughout her distinguished career. She began teaching and training teachers immediately after college, in San Diego & in Jamaica. She spent the majority of her career in the DeKalb County School System, and held the titles of teacher, math specialist, assistant principal, principal, and instructional coordinator. Early in her career, she taught at Terry Mill Elementary School , serving children in the East Lake area, including those who lived in East Lake Meadows, a public housing project that came to be a national symbol for concentrated poverty and limited opportunities among Black children and families in Atlanta. She recognized her students' capacity and thirst for learning, in spite of systemic and structural barriers which undermined their potential for success. Many of the children she served were Head Start participants. Thus, initiating a memorial fund to contribute to the National Head Start Association, which "exists to ensure that all children have the chance to succeed in school and life" provides a great opportunity for family, friends, and colleagues of Dr. McGregor to honor her memory and legacy.
