Doug spent about a month with my family (his aunt and uncle, and we, his cousins) when we lived in CA. I believe he was 14, while I was 10. He played with us for hours while our parents worked, and was so patient, kind, an funny. In looking back I think he probably didn't really care for having to spend so much time with his 4 and 6 year younger cousins, but he never let on. He seemed to be having as much fun as we were. I will always cherish my memories of that summer, and my other memories of him. He was a wonderful person. Amanda, Andrew, Christopher, Catherine, Michael, and his grandchildren, you are all in my prayers. I care for all of you.
We were a year apart. I graduated CA in 79. Doug in 80. We were the best of friends and shared the best of experiences-too many to count. I remember when he told me he was coming to Drake. The great times only continued. The Animal House of Drake University at the time was Phi Delta Theta, and we were among the poster children. We were both “Phi Delts”!

To Amanda, and to Andrew, you must know that above all else, your father was a gentle man. We will keep him always in our memories.

I want to thank everyone who has posted pictures and memories of my dad. I have enjoyed reading them and seeing the pictures very much. I must say this weekend has been the most joyous since he's passed. Reading how much you all loved him and cared for him has given me a sense of peace. Dad was taken from us much to soon. The last 37 years was not enough for me. I miss him everyday. His death was very sudden and it blindsided the whole family.

Reading and seeing the pictures and memories has been the greatest gift you guys could ever give me. My dad's fondest memories were of Japan and all of you. I remember for my bedtime stories growing up I always asked him to tell me stories about his time in Japan. He mentioned all of you who have posted by name at least once.

Jan - I do remember him telling me of the tour around Honshu Island, the hostel, and the song American Pie. Dad used to sing that song all the time and if it came on the radio our ears would bleed from how loud he would have it! LOL.

David - I remember him telling me the soccer story and that he broke his ankle. It was actually one of the latest things we had talked about because my oldest son has always been interested in soccer.

Maya - Not to take away from anyone else.... but you were always his favorite.

He had so many fantastic memories of all of you and it has been so nice reading the stories from someone else's perspective. I know in my heart he will be forever missed, loved and cherished by all of those that had a bond with him. Please if any memories that you haven't shared come up please share them it is very healing for me. I will post more pictures in the days to come of dad in his later years with my brother and I and his grandchildren. My dad was very proud of everything he accomplished in life.

I just wanted to take the time out to thank all of you who have posted and those who come after you all to post. I wish you all the best and God bless.

With all my heart,
Amanda Amos

On our senior trip to Okinawa Japan we did silly “stiff tourist” photo poses. Always had a blast doing goofy things with Doug.

I think this must have been first summer after college (as Doug was wearing his fraternity T- shirt). Happily having drinks together.

I have so many fond memories of Douglas. We were together at CA since I was in 6th grade. In the later high school years we really became BFFs (hahaha, that term didn’t exist in our days), and especially we bonded over our love for motorcycles. Douglas had a Honda CB400 Hawk and me a Suzuki GS400E and we would always argue who had the better bike. Summer 1979 (between 11th and 12th grade) we spent a month on a bike tour around Japan’s Honshu island. We had a really tight budget, I think it was something like Yen 2000/day. We had just a simple tent and sleeping bags and slept pretty much anywhere (I think there was only one night when it rained and we slept in a youth hostel). I remember one night we were sitting on some beach in the middle of nowhere and Douglas played Don McLean’s American Pie (I guess we had some kind of cassette tape player with us....). It was the first time I heard that song and whenever I hear it now it brings back these memories. That summer with Douglas was one of the best times of my life! Rest In Peace Douglas, you were a wonderful and big-hearted dude and left us so much too soon.

I don't have any photos to share, I left CA after 7th grade, but I do have such sweet memories of my friendship with Doug. He was such a kind, gentle soul, funny as hell, and a great guy to be around! He was someone who genuinely cared about and made everyone feel special. I have thought of him often in the past 45 years and wished we had been able to reconnect... Really enjoy seeing these photos of Good ol' Doug, his friends, and family. My thoughts are with each and every one of you missing him. <3

My deepest condolences to Doug’s family, especially his children . I only found out about his passing yesterday. I shared with the Canadian Academy Class of 1980 (our high school in Kobe Japan). I have received comments and pictures from his closest friends. Doug was the sweetest, most gentle soul. I am hoping his CA friends will post as well. Hope you don’t mind that I post a few pics his friends sent me..... has to be in different post. Love and peace to you Doug. 💖

Heaven just received a spirit with an extraordinary sense of humor. We will miss Douglas forever, but knowing he is in the safe hands of God will give us comfort through this difficult time.
Dad took us to Disney World and everything that could go wrong went wrong. Our fuel pump went out on the car in Kentucky and our timing chain broke in the Carolinas near the Smokey Mountains. We eventually arrived at our destination and had a blast.
