Doug's obituary

With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Douglas James Papka, born in 1963 in Billings, Montana to Keith and Doris Papka.

Doug grew up in Billings before his family later made their home in Washington. From a young age, he worked alongside his father, Keith, at the family gas station — an experience that shaped his strong work ethic and love of connecting with people.

Family was always central to his life. He remained especially close to his mother, Doris, whom he loved dearly. Later, she worked beside him doing accounting for his locksmith shop, something that meant so much to him — building a business with the support of his mom by his side.

Doug truly found his calling in locksmithing. He loved his work and took immense pride in his craft. He wasn’t just skilled — he was passionate about teaching. He generously shared his knowledge with everyone he trained or worked with, believing that skills were meant to be passed down and that success was better when shared.

He leaves behind his two daughters, Lydia and Grace, who were the light of his life. Especially in their younger years, he poured his heart into being a loving and involved father — full of energy, laughter, and big personality. He loved his family deeply, including all of his stepchildren. He had a big heart and so much love to give. He did his best, and he loved hard.

Doug was a country boy at heart living a city life. He loved cars, racing, and spending time at his RC track. He admired bold, larger-than-life entertainers like Evel Knievel, Elvis Presley, and Harry Houdini — showmen who captivated audiences — and he carried that same spark himself.

Karaoke was one of his greatest passions. He loved to sing, dance, do impressions, host parties, and do anything he could to make people laugh — even if it meant looking a little silly. His smile and laugh were infectious, and his presence could light up a room.

Doug was deeply creative. His space was filled with photos of family, friends, and the animals he loved. He was incredibly talented in the kitchen — known for baking bread from scratch and making handmade chocolates — and he loved sharing what he knew with anyone willing to listen. He was artistic, curious, and constantly creating and learning.

He cherished his many friends and held them close to his heart. He loved trips to Mexico, cowboy boots and hats, good music, good company, and bringing people together.

Doug is survived by his daughters Lydia and Grace; his father, Keith; and his siblings Dennis, Laurie, and Linda, along with many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

He will be remembered for his laughter, his generosity, his creativity, and the big love he carried for the people in his life.
Forever in our hearts. ❤️
