Douglas's obituary
Douglas Marrero, 90, of Route 6, Mount Jewett, passed away Sunday (Jan. 5, 2025) after a short stay at Bradford Manor. Born September 15, 1934, in Philadelphia, to the late Louis and Emma (Ball) Marrero. On 10/09/1993 he married his wife, Patricia (Meyers), who survives.
Following his fathers death, Douglas and his two Brothers, Mario, and Louis Jr., spent many years at St. Francis and St Joseph home for boys. Douglas remained a devout Catholic throughout his life, and attended many Annual alumni picnics with his lifelong friends from the boys home. Douglas proudly served 4 years in the US Army, and 4 years in the US Air Force during the Korean War. He also was a champion competitive boxer while he served.
Despite facing many hardships in his early life, Douglas remained a free spirit, and a bright light to those he loved dearly. His light shone the brightest on his two nieces Patricia (Weiss) and Lucy (Friedrich) whom he stepped up and selflessly, and willingly raised as his own daughters, alongside the late Dina Marrero. Douglas and Dina (Poppy Doug & Nonna) are also survived by 3 generations of many (great, great) grandchildren, their lives have all been greatly impacted and inspired by their fierce loyalty and love for their family.
Douglas’ other pride and joy was his beloved dogs. He owned “Nanook of The North Kennels” and was an avid musher, and part of the Pennsylvania Sled Dog Club. He competed in hundreds of sled races around the North East into his 70s. Douglas was a “local legend” in Souderton Pa because of his years spent working as a high school security guard, or as he proudly signed in yearbooks- “Rent-a-Cop”. His former students shared tales of how he chased them for many blocks across town when they tried to skip school, or how he let it slide if they got him Mcdonalds- but mostly his sense of humor, contagious smile, and kind soul.
Doug spent his last years in his home with his wife, Patricia, surrounded by his many trophies, awards, photos, and mementos of his best memories and accomplishments. His niece Patricia and her husband, Cliff (Weiss), dedicated their time caring for him until his last weeks here with us. “In My fathers house, are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you” John 14:2 – We hope that behind the mansion, there is a trail full of crisp snow, a team of sled dogs, and an audience of angels to (loudly) sing his favorite songs too.
