Our overnight white water river rafting trip in Colorado with all 3 kids. I made him wait for that trip until Philina was totally potty trained, which took 8 yrs with her developmental delays, and fear of any water she couldn't see the bottom of.  It was a very memorable trip! We chose a guided one, for safety reasons. Philina dubbed our guide "stray dog", which he liked. Our trip consisted of 2 rafts, 1 for passengers (us and 1 other couple), and a supply raft for tents, sleeping bags, spare clothes, food & cooking supplies.  Philina wore a life vest the entire time, even to sleep in.  And my sole job was to sit next to her on the raft and keep her safe.  'Dog' let Thom, Doug & the other guy take turns steering the raft in calm stretches of water.  Everything went very smoothly for about 1/2 a day.  But then we hit a particularly bad stretch of rapids, and our raft flipped.  I grabbed Philina's arm as we went in, and got her to a rock in the middle of the river, where she sat screaming until 'Dog' got the raft righted and collected Doug, Thom & Lara.  The other couple declared him a maniac, and refused to get back on the raft with him.  They spent the rest of the trip on the supply raft, that hadn't flipped.  Philina was fine once "Dog" brought the raft over to her rock, and she was safely back high above water.  (That girl had once learned to row a boat to avoid having to use a float in a lake.)  That was our only mishap on the trip.  We all, even Philina, enjoyed it very much.  And we all learned a valuable lesson.  Miss Philina truly did have a 'bladder of iron',  and wouldn't go without some form of a real looking toilet.  So from that trip on, a 5 gallon bucket & a toilet seat had a permanent place of honor in the back of Doug's Jeep.

I have fond memories of spending time with Doug at SOFT Conferences. He always had a smile on his face and his dry sense of humor was always fun. You'll be missed...

In a crowded bar. His opening line was, "That's an interesting hat, where'd you get it?" Actually it was a really ugly hat, but a gift from the bar tenders little brother.
