I was so sorry to hear about Douglas's passing. He was such a [ kind ] and [ a delightful person to know. Any hurricane in the gulf would prompt a call to be sure we were ok- thanks care caring Doug. James & Martha Reeder.

Uncle Doug.. A man of few words, but a very strong presence.  Even with a strong presence, stood a  man that was every bit humble and understanding.  His mannerisms and thoughtful  ways will always be present in our hearts.  With much love and everlasting thoughts ..

David Wayne Lee

It was early 1989 when I met Doug through Chris. I'd go to their house down in Conroy quite often and hang out with Chris as he and I played a lot of golf together.  I'd see Doug from time to time,  and even Big Daddy!  Doug was a man of few words so it was typically just a simple nod or hi, but never really any conversations.

Doug  played golf with us often, however; there was one particular day a few months into my encounters with Doug that stood out and gave me a bit of insight into the man, and would forever be etched in my mind.

We were on our way to play Palisades Golf Club , which was about a 40 minute drive. If I recall correctly, it was Doug, Chris, Myself and Andy.  We were all chit chatting and catching up ( and by all, I mean myself, Chris and Andy) About 15 minutes into our drive, Doug had apparently reached the threshold of maximum number of words allowed to penetrate his ears within close quarters.

Doug had not said a word the entire drive so far,  yet with one clear and  concise request (that was not really a request at all), he said "That's about enough chatter, why don't we all see if we can be quiet for the rest of the drive".  And for the next 25 of the longest minutes of any drive , there was quiet indeed!

Not long after that day, I remember making this comment to Chris......." You know, Chris, I don't think your Dad likes me.  I've  been around you guys for a few months now, and I don't think he has even said two words to me!...... To which Chris promptly and strongly replied...." Oh noooo  Brad, If he said two words to you, then that means he DEFINITELY likes you!"

That's when I began to better understand and appreciate this man a few words. He didn't use many, but he used them well! I knew he loved me, because I felt it, and I'm certain he knew I loved him too.

Here is a poem I think partially captures the essence of the man I grew to know, love, and respect!

DOUGLAS WAYNE LEE

He'd pass you by with a quiet grin, Not much to say, but he'd let you in.

For in his eyes, if you looked close, Were the whispers of kindness, gentle and most.

No need for chatter, no need for song, Doug Lee's love was quiet but strong.

He'd lift your spirits with a look or a sigh, And leave you wondering how, and why.

For words, you see, were never his tool, But his love for the world? Oh, that was full.

A hug when you needed, a hand when you fell, Doug Lee's heart spoke louder than words could tell.

So here's to Doug, with his soft-spoken ways, Who loved us all through the quiet of days.

A man of few words, but deep in his soul, He loved us all, and made us whole.

I met Doug in Denver 40 years ago. We became fast friends and have been close ever since. No matter how much we spoke about old man time sneaking up, it hits you hard when you get a call and hear a close friend is gone. Especially a friend like Doug. Rest in Peace my friend.

Doug and I, along with his sister and 5 of my siblings, grew up together at Sunny Glen Children's Home in San Benito, Texas from the early 1950s until we all graduated from High School in the 60s.  Doug and Barbara  were one of 5 sets of twins in our big family of 100 children.  Doug's strong Christian values were instilled by loving staff members. He excelled in school, sports, social activities, and grew up to become a wholesome young man in society.

Doug and I were blessed to be able to attend Abilene Christian College at the same time.  As with all of us "Sunny Glenners," our lives took us in different directions. We saw each other several times overs the decades at periodic Sunny Glen Reunions.  My wife, Linda, and I last saw Doug and his lifelong brother of the heart, Marlin Mabry, at a 2012 reunion. We started communicating again by phone and messenging during the prior 12 months before his death.  He and I really enjoyed this final long-distance "reunion" here on earth.  Linda and I and our family members, look forward to our final reunion in heaven--then, with God our Creator and with Jesus Christ our Savior and Friend.

We share the sorrow felt by Doug's friends and family. We hope that each of us will eventually turn this big loss in our lives into gains, including the reality of becoming stronger spiritually and emotionally.

See you later, Doug!  In Christian love, Perry Moore

I am so sorry for your loss.  My sincerest sympathy goes out to the entire family.  Doug was a great and loyal friend to my brother, Marlin Mabry, who passed in January 2023.  Doug came to Houston to the service at the VA Memorial Cemetery while I'm sure he may not have felt very well then.  What a true sign of friendship.  I'm sure he will be missed greatly by not only his family but many many others.  Even though I did not know him well, we were talking in the last year on Facebook and text .  He always sent me no noes on how much he missed Marlin.  I can't tell you how many times he said he wanted to be with his beloved Mary Lou.  Now, he will be smiling in Heaven for an eternity.  God Bless You All.

Chris ,Mike & Family.  I am so sorry to hear of Doug’s passing. He spent many hours with the Relocation Ladies as an honorary member of our Girls Night Out group.  He and Mary Lou will be in my memories with their laughter  and love. Faye Chadwick
