Douglas's obituary
Douglas Jay Harmelink 67, passed away on January 28, 2026 at his home in Prior Lake, MN.
Doug was born on October 30, 1958 in Orange City, Iowa. He grew up on the family farm near Hospers, attending Floyd Valley High school, where he developed the independence and outgoing personality that would define the rest of his life.
Doug attended the University of Northern Iowa before beginning a long career in the insurance industry, working for many years in Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska. Later in his career, he owned and operated Advanced Meetings, where he enjoyed running his own business and the opportunity to connect with people and build lasting relationships.
Doug was a natural conversationalist who never met a stranger. He loved spending time with friends, whether on the golf course, at the dart board in a local pub, or gathered on his screened-in porch in thoughtful discussion. In his younger years, he discovered a passion for speech and debate, something that stayed with him throughout his life. He had a gift for engaging others, and many of his favorite moments were long conversations with family and friends.
Doug also had a deep love for music. He loved attending concerts and enjoyed music at home. He loved to cook and took pride in meticulously preparing meals, always paying close attention to the details, and he enjoyed the process of cooking just as much as sharing the meal.
He loved to travel over the years, especially when it meant spending time with his family. He treasured the baseball trips he took with his sons and made it a priority to be there whenever he could, especially when his son was playing for the University of Nebraska. He was able to travel to both home and away games to watch him play.
Doug converted to Catholicism after meeting his former wife, Marg Harmelink, and maintained a lifelong interest in learning about the faith. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church for many years.
He was also a member of Toastmasters and enjoyed opportunities to speak, debate, and, of course, connect with others. Among his favorite memories was volunteering with Operation Others, especially driving his sons around Omaha delivering food baskets during the Christmas season while they attended Creighton Prep.
Doug is survived by his children, Megan (Mitch) Urosevich of Omaha NE, Mike (Brittani) of Ft. Worth, TX, and Joe (Kari) of Omaha, NE; his grandchildren, Mia, Will, Ruby, Hayley, Beau, and Walker, who brought him great pride and joy; his mother, Beverly Harmelink; and his brothers, John Alan (Deb), Dan, and Dave, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, John Harmelink.
