Sorry to hear of his passing so young. I knew Doug in his youth when I worked in harvest for Leighton Duckworth.  He is in God hands and a loving environment.

This note is from Jeff Peterman. Doug was my best friend all through high school. We did so much together that he was the closest person to being my brother that ever existed. I lived with him in high school and I lived with his brother after high school and Doug lived with me in Reston and his sister even lived at the the house in Reston for a short time too. The Fondahns were like family to me. Doug was the best man at my wedding. When a person like Doug passes away he is never forgotten. He lives in the memories of so many people. His soul lives on in eternity and in the hearts of all that knew him. The only thing that separated us was the devotion we both gave to our families. We both worked many jobs together starting with newspapers and restaurants. Even jobs at the beaches where we both lived during summers in Ocean City. There were so many great memories we had because we both did so much. I’m sure he continued to make life fun for all who were close to him. It is painful for those who now have to live without him but I can assure you his soul will never die!

Doug,

You weren't just my little brother, toting you around like my own in the U.S. and Asia. You were my best friend and my better half when we grew up.  We did EVERYTHING together: vacationed, hiked, camped, so many beaches to surf, building castles, and watching your dune buggy fight its way through dunes and waves! You were so athletic.  You amazed me with your agility in sand and snow.  I have great pictures of your gymnastic flips at Rehoboth and Ocean City beaches. Then we'd sneak to an abandoned rooftop and sleep under the stars, or in the back of your Bronco finding empty garages or by private (and illegal) inlets to rest our happy heads down. We never got caught - we were too instinctive and invincible! You loved the water, like me, and I'll always be your mermaid at Highland Swim Club, swim the oceans blue with you, and catch a boat ride partying with your friends around the lakes, rejoicing summer.  And what a daredevil!  Motorcycles with Gunther, boat racing with David, classic cars with Jeff, and sneaking into Kings Dominion and used car lots like American Graffiti!

In winter, the mountain slopes brought many a contest - you won of course, and I have an awesome airborne photo of you jumping off that huge homemade ski run that you and Jeff constructed at Ladybird.  Let's not forget Trinket's ice maze forts.

You were extremely talented artistically too. You got that from mom. I kept some of your drawings, especially laughing at those cartoon, flip-page booklets you created.  You also discovered another talent at age 8 in the kitchen, making no-bake chocolate oatmeal cookies in the saucepan.  Thanks for dinner! Then your hotel/restaurant degree steered you in becoming manager of many prominent restaurants and clubs. We swapped some pretty tasty homemade recipes too. Thanks for dinner! You ultimately chose a computer programming career, equally skilled.

What we got from dad was his music appreciation.  We sang and danced, on the road, on the boardwalk and piers (can you hear the crowd at Rustlers cheering at us?), with your friends, and at your wedding. I forgive you for taping over my songs and concerts! Each of us played an instrument. I felt your pain with bruised and bloody lips with braces when you started trumpet.  Then on to piano, saxophone, and drums, but you always went back to your trumpet. Rock and country: Grateful Dead, Electric Light Orchestra, Led Zepplin, Yes, Little Feat, Jimmy Buffet, CSNY, Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker, and Willie, Waylon and the boys - all greats of the 70s you listened to endlessly. Who knew you were a ringer for Randy Travis!

Brother, you were intelligent, talented, creative, athletic, funny, kind-hearted, strong, handsome, and proud. So many memories, not enough time to make more. I'll never understand why you wanted to leave us early, but my heart can only heal knowing you're no longer in pain. I miss you TERRIBLY and always will.  My love for you runs deeper than the ocean and wider than the sky. Thank you for sharing your life with me. So much fun and laughter. Send me a sign bro. This Natural Lite's for you!

 Love, Sis  XOXOX
